Microsoft .net Question

While trying to download some trial software (a better DVD player than
WIndows Media Player) I was told to install Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 and
I clicked on the link to do so. That's when I learned I had to uninstall
4-5.Net Framework things (including what I recall was 3.5 or something lilke
that), which was a bit of a challenge until I found a tool to do so. Now I
am in the process (at least I think I am) of downloading and installing
Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 Redistributable. The web page tells me Your
Download Has Started. That was quite a while ago. There is no progress
indicator so I am trying to figure out how long to wait until I throw in the
towel. I may have made some progress: I can now see Microsoft .Net
Framework 2.0 in Add/Remove Programs. That's not exactly what the webpage
tells me is (still?) being downloaded. I figured maybe Wndows sort of
forgot what it was doing and so I tried to download it a second time.
However, I was informed that this was not possible as the Windows Installer
is already at work. Still? Does it ever finish? Should it take hours?
Has Windows (XP Pro SP3) gone off the rails? Is there some trick to this
..Net stuff? Or with this Windows Installer? Apparently I need this ,Net
stuff--I had a ton of it before I uninstalled it.
