There are 4 version of the .Net framework - 1.0, 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0 (just
released).
You will need the specific .Net framework for whatever app you want to run.
That's approx a 25MB dl for each framework you want to install. This
nightmare is just beginning. How mush drive space will Microsoft eventually
consume with this bloated, ill-thought-out piece of crap? We're at 100 MB
for the framework (BEFORE they're unzipped and installed) and we'll surely
go up from there.
The neat thing is that Microsoft is not pushing this out via bittorrents as
a priority upgrade (even though they say it is the future of Windows
programming - God help us all). Nope, each software vender is responsible
for adding the framework to his/her application. That increases every .Net
application download by about 25 MB. Not a big deal if you're on broadband,
but one hell of deal if you're a part of the almost 50% of Americans that
still don't have access to broadband.
This is one of the biggest mistakes I have ever seen a company as large as
Microsoft make. It will be an unmitigated disaster for the OS and for the
application market.
Look for less and less freeware that is actually powerful and worth having.
That means higher software prices and fewer choices for consumers like
yourself.
Well, I've got to get off the soapbox and get back to work.
Good luck to you!
