.net framework problem

A program I added to my machine added the .net framework. Since then,
many of my non-microsoft programs won't work, my peoplepc account keeps
freezing, etc. I'm running an IBM 600X with XP Home. The ADD/REMOVE
WINDOWS COMPONENTS section won't remove this item. How can I get rid
of it without reformatting my harddrive (I've misplaced some of my
disks so it's impossible at this time to do that).

.NET should only be available thru microsoft,not a 3rd party.Either way,try
windows update for patches etc, also if .NET is at v1.1 you might upgrade to
v2.0.

Not true, it is included on many installation CDs for many programs.

Also, .Net v2.0 is NOT an upgrade to v1.1. If a program requires v1.1, it
will most likely not work if v1.1 is not installed, and visa-versa.

Wrong again, Andrew. .Net 2.0 is not an upgrade to 1.1. The .net framework
2.0 is a run time file needed for programs written with .net 2.0 and the
..net framework 1.1 is a run time file needed for programs written with .net
1.1. One doesn't substitute for the other and most people need both.

You mean there is no entry for .net in Add/Remove programs? Have you tried
uninstalling the program that added .net? Have you tried a system restore
to before the other program was installed? Have you contacted the program
vendor to ask how to remove it?

Go to windows update and see what's offered there. There could be an update
for the version on your system. Note, higher version numbers are not an
update to .net. They are different versions and are run separately.

Ignore posts by Andrew E. - the resident troll here. Everything he said is
wrong. Sometimes 3rd party software comes bundled with the version of .Net
it needs. Higher version numbers of .Net are not an upgrade for the lower
version numbers. They are separate environments. Some programs need .Net
1.1, some need .Net 2.0, and some .Net 3.0. All can exist on the same
system at the same time.

Unfortunately, when I upgrade I have similar problems with runnin
Corel and other non-microsoft programs.

I have tried to delete a couple of upgrades in order to simpl
reinstall XP Home, but now I'm asked for a code, which I don't have.
It refuses to recognize me as the administrator.

Also, I have no idea which program added in the .net program and
don't see it on the add/delete program

Don't you know what software you have installed about the time this problem
showed up? Have you looked in System Restore for restore points to indicate
what software was installed? Have you tried going back and uninstalling the
newly installed software in the order you put it on, then doing a System
Restore to before the installs?

Sorry cathy but I can't help you. You post is very unclear on what you are
trying to do and what problems you're experiencing for example what code
your talking about, and what do you mean by "it" won't recognize you as the
administrator? In general you don't need to delete "upgrades" to reinstall
an OS. Why would you think you needed to do that? How are you trying to
reinstall the OS?

Thank you everyone for your help.

I did go back and restore to as early a point as I could and delete
all new programs that I had added since October, when the proble
origionally popped up. However the .net framework program would not g
away along with the programs I'd deleted.

A friend who works in IT found info on how to remove the .net progra
through the Windows Installer program on the Microsoft webpage (nice t
know how to word these problems in a way Microsoft Help understands).

I have always had problems running upgrades, etc., on my laptop.
Several friends who work in the field told me it's a problem they'v
noticed in XP Home (perhaps it doesn't like laptops). So I hav
conflicts with running products such as WordPerfect when I downloa
upgrades, etc.

While I might seem like a bit of a ditz, I'm actually really good a
the hardware stuff, it's Microsoft that tends to defete me

I'm glad you got it fixed cathy. Did you ever find out which program
installed .Net? It could also have come as an update through windows
update, but however it was installed, there should have been an entry for it
in Add/Remove programs. Because there was not, then something went wrong
with the original installation of it, which is probably the root reason for
the problems you experienced.

As to there being a problem with updates, and XP Home and laptops, I just
don't see that. Not sure where you're IT friends are getting that info, but
in my experience it's not an issue of the OS, it's making sure the drivers
are up to date, the software installed is good, and regular maintenance is
done. WordPerfect runs great on XP, Home and Pro. I'm currently running
version 12. I had some issues with version 8, I think it was, or was it 10?
I'm not sure. But the problems were minor.
