They're safe to remove if you don't need them, only you can determine that,
why do you feel the need to remove them?

Yes, doing so will free some disk space. But, the next time that you try to
run a program that relies on one or more of those things, the program will
fail. Then, you would need to install whichever one(s) are needed by the
program.

Two points here:

1. Yes, deleting them would free up some disk space. But the amount of
disk space saved will only be a few pennies worth. If that amount is
significant to you, deleting such files would be no more than a
stopgap measure, and the only real solution to your problem is buying
a larger drive.

2. If you delete any of those files, any programs which need them will
cease to run. If you don't have any such programs now, you may in the
future.

So, in general, I think deleting any of them is a poor idea.

Windows Update will try to download these automatically too. You will need
to hide the updates there too

If the OP has a graphics card that requires .NET Framework 2 then he/she
will need to download it again

P A Bear,

The question has been answered

What are you doing on the Microsoft Development Network website? Did you
search Google? You're not a programmer for sure but maybe on first line
support

I'll give you a "depends" answer.

If you have an older program that used the 1.1 version for instance, then
installed the subsequent versions of NET framework, AND the program ceased
to operate properly for one part or another of it, AND you remove the
program, AND, reinstalled same program and became fully functional, yes you
can remove the previous version of NET framework. At least that's what I
ran into involving one 3rd party application.

If in the same scenario, you choose to remove the newer versions, and leave
1.1, and you've already done the uninstall/reinstall of said 3rd party app
and it works fully with the newest version of NET framework, you may have to
do another uninstall/reinstall of that 3rd party application.

It's unlikely that you need all of them. Microsoft Update has them under the optional updates, which
you might have downloaded.

3.5 also downloades 3.0 and 2.0, which is why you end up with so many.

You don't save an awful lot of space by removing them, but combined with other measures to save
space, these things can add up to quite a bit of space. Upgrading to a bigger hard drive is fine for
someone with good PC technical skills, but isn't the sort of thing that someone who is not so
confident about these things.

Yes I'm sure about it - it's unlikely (note that I said unlikely) that you need all of them.

Just because they are on a PC doesn't mean that they are needed. As I said, a PC user might have
installed all of the optional updates.

You sure about that?...

Do I need still need older versions of the .NET Framework on my system after
installing .NET Framework 3.5 SP1?

You're right. MS Updates detect one version and offer it all. Even on
a machine without any .NET, at one time updates were offered, so a LOT
of users have it installed and it might not even be used.
