Nero

Just bought a new DVD writer... a Lite-On. Nero 7 Essentials comes bundled
with it. But Vista won't let it install because it's incompatible. So I
went to the Nero site and they have a "free upgrade" that's Vista
compatible. But to make *that* work you have to have a serial number. There
is no serial number on the bundled CD or on its jacket.
I called Lite-On. No help but they acknowledged the problem.
Now what?

Sorry to be ranting about *everything* but hopefully I can eventually get
this OS in useable condition!

Menno:
Nero is Vista compatible as of version 7.7.5.1, being 7.8.5.0 the newest and
most recommendable one.
From the information you give your only way out is to buy it.
Depending of your "burning" needs there exist a few freeware burning
programs on the web that might suit you.
I can't recall any names now (Deepburner?) but if you google around you will
surely find one in a few minutes.
For just burning ISO images to disk there is the Alex Feinmann's freeware
ISO recorder (Vista compatible, of course).

The Nero OEM version as supplied with OEM optical drives is not eligible for
the update..

If you install Nero
click on StartSmart
Click on the button right in the Bottom Right Corner ( The Flames)
Up will come the programs installed click Serial Numbers and you
will see the serial numbers there

Menno,

The serial number appears on the installation screen. The page at Nero on serial
numbers is here:
http://www.nero.com//enu/FAQ_Serial_Number_Where_To_Find_1.html

However, it doesn't discuss the case where you can't install at all. You have two
choices:

1.) Start the installation using your OEM disk on a non-Vista PC and copy the number
when it appears on the installation screen. Then cancel or uninstall Nero.

2.) E-mail Nero customer service and explain the situation
([email protected]). They will send you a number, but it may take a few
days before they respond. If you are not in the US, you will have to locate the
appropriate address on their Support pages.

Thanks. I will do that and see what happens!

Nero 7 or Nero 6? Nero 7 is supposed to run on Vista, Nero 6 does not.

Use ImgBurn which is free and likely does all that the OEM Nero does.

Okay! Did it on an XP machine. Ran it till the serial number showed up
and then copied it and cancelled.
Then I ran the downloaded upgrade in Vista and used that serial number.
And it worked perfectly!
2.) E-mail Nero customer service... <snip>

Not needed.

Thanks!

No it doesn't do what Nero does

Let me know if once you get Nero running on vista, if you start getting a'debug.txt' file showing up on your drive. I get the file with just about every program. I've given up deleting it. It just over writes itself. But it's completely annoying.

Nero Essentials 7 is what was bundled with the writer. It didn't work. But
the free upgrade worked when I was able to figure the serial number thing
out.
