Vista compatible DVD writer

Does anyone know of a DVD writer which is compatible with Vista and
includes DVD burning software that is also compatible with Vista. For
some reason I can find no information on the internet on this subject.
I must be looking in the wrong place! I already had to send back a
Samsung drive because it was incompatible with Vista and none of the
bundled software would install.

Thanks!

I've not heard of a Vista capable DVD writer. Since they all should pretty
much work. I have 3 different DVD writers and they all work fine. Roxio Easy
Creator 9.0 works, and they just released an update for version 7.5 to help
it work.

I have a Pioneer and 2 Lite-ons, that are about 2 years old. Odd that your
Samsung didn't work. Probably just needed a firmware update.

Here's the 18x model of the Pioneer I have (which is 16x)

it also has the works with Vista logo

Again, it's hard to belive all drives don't work, except maybe really old
ones or ones with some kind of defect. do you remember which model of the
Samsung you had ?

My 6 month old LG Super Multi DVD burner works fine. Already have
burned in excess of 100 DVDs, CDs of all types. Supports DVD-, DVD+
even DVD ROM at up to 16X depending on media type. While it came with
basic DVD software, it was a watered down version of Nero and that
does not work with Vista. You would need to upgrade to the full
version or Easy Creator which I use and have tested and works well in
Vista. Comes in internal or external models. I paid about $80 for a
internal. Seems a solid as a rock. Try Egghead.

I think you will find most current DVD writers are suitable we are using
Plextor PX760A, and Nero 7, which is available from most vendors as an "OEM
Essential Suite" if purchased with a drive. Also Vista has DVD writing
software built in to the software.

Any further advice please post.

Thanks for the replies.

I actually bought an LG DVD Writer (got my Korean companies mixed
up:)).

Model number GSAH42N
http://preview.tinyurl.com/29jvrw

Vista not listed as a compatible OS.

My experiences were:
*Bundled software wouldnt install (apart from Nero) reason: not
compatible with Vista.
*IIRC (writer has already been returned to the retailer) there was a
firmware installer included on CD, but it refused to run on Vista.
*No downloadable Vista-related updates that I could find.
*Vista flagged known problems (albeit unspecified) with the bundled
version of Nero (express 6).
*Nero crashed numerous times, and failed on the attempt at writing to
a DVD.

It sounds like this is just bad luck and the vast majority of DVD
writers will work fine, especially brand new ones like the LG model I
bought (but obviously not that particular model)?

I'll have another go at trying to find any help on Vista's built-in
DVD writing facilities when I get home, to see if I really need extra
DVD burning software. I did have a look before buying a DVD writer,
but couldnt find any spec of what facilities are built in to Vista.

I use several burners and have had luck with them. I am a big fan of Nero
for burning and they have a version (7.7.5.1) that's compatible with Vista.
I usually don't use the bundled versions but prefer the full version.

Most of my burners are Sony (internal and external) and all work fine in
Vista (5 machines).

Here's the link for my favorite internal burner:

Here's the link for the 7.7.5.1 update for Nero (you can try it before you
buy it):

This is an interesting quandary since it seems like most optical drive
compatibility problems are fixed with a firmware update. It wouldn't
surprise me that you would have a hard time finding a drive that
specifically lists Vista as a compatible OS since I'm sure many OEMs are
still doing final testing or still bundle incompatible apps. I would try
another brand and lean towards the later 16-18x dual layer models on the
assumption that they are newer models and less likely to have problems.
