i have XP sp2, i have installed nero on my system. i used to be able to click
on a picture/file and copy/send/move it to a cd or dvd. i now find that the
only way that i can put anything onto disc is through nero, this can be quite
labourious. i don't want to uninstall nero but i would like to regain the
ability to move files to and from disc just using XP as i used to, i do i get
back to the default XP facility for doing this, as much detail as possible
please, many thanks and kind regards.

Check to make sure that you CDRW drive is enabled.
Right click on your CDRW drive, select Properties, Recording tab, Enable.

If that is correct, you could try:-
1. Click on Start
2. Click on Run
3. Type the following in the textbox: REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL
(Note that there is a space between ...32 and SHI...)
4. Press Enter.

I found out that using a cd to transfer information is not an easy medium to
use. Cd's require software to write and read information. A lot of cd
software is not compatible and I have Nero on my PC and had problems trading
information from a PC to laptop running Roxio cd software. I finally gave up
after a number of people also said this is not like the old floppies where
you can drag and drop information. CDs are good for copying music and
pictures but if you want to just move files, word documents etc use a flash
drive (they are pretty cheap these days). With those you can move lots of
information, store information and easlily drag and drop.

I don't agree.

Almost all CD software *is* compatible. See below for the primary exception.

It can be, *if* you use packet writing software, like InCD. But that is
exactly the area where incompatabilities lie. I recommend against using
packet-writing software because although it makes writing a little easier,
it increases the risk of incompatibility.

Also note that CDRW is considerably more likely to result in incompatibility
thatn CDR.

Yes, thumb drives are fine for this, and perhaps slightly easier to use. I'm
not recommending against them, but I don't recommend against CDs either.
