Nero fiddles while I burn!!!

Hi gang,

I've been having all kinds of problems with InCD (UDF software
that comes with Nero), and I'm TRYING to switch to another
(Sonic - with DLA).

When I clicked on the setup utility for DLA, it told me that
there is incompatible software on my system - more
specifically, *Nero*. It then asked me if I want to remove
it, to which I clicked "yes". It started to initiate the
uninstall process, but aborted with an error:

Internal Error 2203: C:\WINNT\Installer\448396.ipi,
-2147287035

I've emailed Nero about this, asking them what to do,
and their automated response system tells me that
they'll get back to me in 3 days.

I'm wondering if any of you geniuses knows of a way to
remove Nero manually - so I can get on with it. I can't
install Sonic (DLA) until I get rid of Nero.

Thanks,

Solitary Soul

- Delete every reference to "Nero" in the registry.
- Delete the Nero software folder on your hard disk.

Is there not an "uninstall Nero" option in the add/remove programs section?
There should be one. You could try re-installing Nero and then uninstalling
it. Something else you could try is a registry cleaning tool (eg jv16 power
tools). After deleting all of the program files (for Nero) manually the
registry cleanup may remove all of the old Nero entries when it finds the
program no longer exists.

!!!

Really? ... Is THAT all there is to it?

I thought that if I searched my hard drive for "Nero"
and deleted everything that came up that it would
take care of all the executables and support files,
but I didn't know about the registry.

Just search the registry for the word "Nero" and delete
every entry I find? ... is the search case sensitive?

"Nero" .vs. "nero"?

Thanks Pegasus,

It's up to you to make the search case sensitive or otherwise.
Note that you might be dealing with dozens or hundreds of
references.

Note also that if the good Nero people placed some files into
c:\winnt\system32\drivers then you may not necessarily spot
them as pertaining to Nero. That's why it is preferable to use
the manufacturer-supplied uninstallation routine.

ARG!!! ... you're right ... I stopped counting after 300.

Do you know of any utilities that I can use to delete every entry
that contains a given search string?

Hopefully, the "good Nero people" will get to me before the week-end.

A few years ago I downloaded regview.exe from
www.rocketdownload.com. It can do this sort of
thing. However, I would be relucant to use it for
deleting keys, since it can easily delete the
most unexpected keys such as "BannerOperation"
(I made this up just now).

So you want an automated way to delete every registry key in which its
name contains "nero", a data item has "nero" in its name, or the data
item has a value with "nero" in it? So you want to delete all entries
that happen to contain:

NERO
geNEROus
oNEROus
diNERO

and everything else that has "nero" as a substring within it? Not
likely. You're expected to exercise some cogitation in devining if a
registry key or data value should be deleted.

Install Nero again. Then you can use its uninstall program to remove
it. Then delete the remnant installation directory. Then, if you want,
go into the registry and search on "nero" where YOU will decide if that
entry is for Nero or for something else. Some entries may be class IDs
that you will have to perform another search to find the other registry
key(s) that reference it.

Not all un-installs are equal. Some like to stuff lying around..

(ever try to get ride of Adobe? It's John Beluisi "The Thing that Wouldn't Leave" - old SNL

Also, some versions win installer leave .msi files and registry info. (might not be "nero" at fault here

A better choice might be to *re-install* Nero, then remove it after
that through the normal un-install. That will get rid of 99% of what
you need out. Hunt and peck will leave all sorts of stuff behind you
never thought about.

Check out some of the CD-ROm newsgroups for more info on software in
this area. There are some knowledgable people out there. Whatever you
do, avoid Adaptec/Roxio software.

Hi Greg!

Is there not an "uninstall Nero" option in the add/remove programs section?
There should be one.

Yes - indeed there is - but when I use it, the process aborts
with the same internal error - same problem.

You could try re-installing Nero and then uninstalling it.

Tried that - Nero detects itself and tells me that it has to remove
the previous version of itself before it can perform the install.

Then ... guess what happens!

Something else you could try is a registry cleaning tool (eg jv16 power
tools). After deleting all of the program files (for Nero) manually the
registry cleanup may remove all of the old Nero entries when it finds the
program no longer exists.

I had this thought while lying in bed last night. Only, what I was
thinking was to boot up in safe mode, delete all files and folders
with "Nero", then run either Norton WinDoctor or scanreg (/fix?)
to work over the registry, reboot in regular mode, THEN reinstall
Nero, THEN uninstall it and clean everything up.

What do you guys think?

THIS is a good thought.

The thing that's really weird is that I tried installing and uninstalling
on another system - one that doesn't have as much stuff on it - and it
worked fine. THAT leads me to believe that (as you alluded to) there is
something conflicting with the uninstaller - but how do I figgir out what
it might be?

Internal Error 2203: C:\WINNT\Installer\448396.ipi,
-2147287035

Any clue with the error message?

Install Nero again.

After a visit to Nero's website, I discovered that Nero is releasing
a new demo version within the next few days. Mebbe I should wait
for the demo version, then attempt to install it over my current
installation and see if it can resolve the situation.

... if noone has any better ideas? *shrug*

Good idea - any recommendations? - soze I don't have to go rummaging
around the many thousands of NG's to find one that would be a good bet
(or several good bets - why limit myself to one?).

Whatever you do, avoid Adaptec/Roxio software.

THIS sounds like good advice - I'm going with Sonic.

See if deleting the current uninstall entry lets you install Nero atop
itself:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
Microsoft
Windows
CurrentVersion
Uninstall
Nero - Burning Rom!UninstallKey

If that doesn't work, delete this registry key again (if it gets
recreated) and delete the old Nero install directory and try again. If
that still doesn't work, try deleting the above and also delete the
registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
Ahead

as this is where many of the configuration settings for Nero are stored
in the registry. And if that still doesn't work, well, contact the
author of the product to ask them how to make their product behave. You
can submit a web form support request at:

http://www.nero.com/us/support.php

Hi again gang,

Nero came through with a cleaning tool, and I got all the Nero
stuff out of my system - at last.

The problem is worse than I thought.

The problems that I was having with Nero were actually caused
by the installer. I tried to install Sonic DLA,
And the installer aborted the process with the error message:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Installer information

Internal error 2203. C:\WINNT\Installer\740ff.ipi,
-2147287035
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I went into Add/Remove Programs, and I tried to uninstall the
previous installation of Sonic RecordNow!, and the installer
aborted the process with the error message:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Sonic RecordNow! Deluxe

Internal error 2203. C:\WINNT\Installer\7410a.ipi,
-2147287035

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

What is the deal with the installer?

... anyone? :’-(

I’m about ready to go get a bottle of whiskey
and a loaded revolver.

Thanks,
