I have a problem with a corrupted sound program that controls volume control
on my Windows XP system, and the given solution was to reinstall the file
from the XP disc. As the subject says, my computer came preloaded with
Windows XP. I'm a legitimate user of Windows XP, so how can I solve the
problem without rebuying the disc?

If you know the name of the previously installed sound program, you could
search online for the relevant sound drivers / program and reinstall them /
it.

Looking in these places can also help you determine which drivers you need
to download

(1) Start > Run > msinfo32 > Components > Sound Device
(2) Device Manager .. Start > Run > devmgmt.msc
(3)Opening up the oem0.inf, oem1.inf, oem3.inf,.... files in c:\Windows\inf
in notepad

And if your sys came pre loaded, I believe under the MS Licence
stipulations, the provider (assuming new) is obliged to provide you either
with a recovery disk, or a hidden recovery partion.
Either read your PC bumph or contact supplier, and no you havent allready
purchased the o/s
