Need Wireless Network Help

I purchased a Motorola SBG900 wireless cable modem which uses 802.11g
wireless networking. I can access the network with my laptop if I have the
network unsecured, but if I secure the network I don't seem to be doing the
right things to be able to connect. I set up a wireless network with a
linksys wireless router and it was much simpler. How do I make this set up
work?
