If I upgrade will I lose the programs I have already installed? Is there
a special way to do an upgrade? Thanks.

If you do an upgrade install you will retain all your current installed
programs. If you do a clean install you will lose everything. Boot to the xp
cd and choose upgrade install.

I don't think you can Upgrade over XP Home, you can only do a clean install.

(AFAIK!)

By definition, an "upgrade" (as opposed to a clean installation)
means that all data, programs, etc. are kept intact.
However there are no guarantees. However unlikely, it's always
possible that something might go wrong. For that reason it's
prudent to be sure you have a backup of anything you can't afford
to lose before beginning.

Boot from the CD, choose Upgrade, and follow the prompts.

This is one of the problems, there are two definitions of the term
"upgrade"! One means to install a newer OS on top of the older, the other
means to "move" from an inferior OS to a superior, not neccessarily by doing
the "upgrade" option!

First make sure you need one of the facilities that are only in Pro.

If you proceed, get the Pro Upgrade CD (*not* one of the cheap OEM ones)
and run it from the Home system. Take Install, continue with the
offered Upgrade

Everything will remain the same, except some system settings will revert
to default values

Thanks Ken. I appreciate the advise.
