first of all, what kind of HD are you trying to zero
out?
western digital drives come with a floppy that has a
program to do exactly what you say,"write zeros to the
drive", and it will wipe any information on the drive as
well, in doing so.
once complete you should "format", then go ahead with a
fresh install.
