What I need is this, I need the file from XP named rundll32.exe.
I have gotten much advise here but nothing works. Most advise involves using
the xp disks to extract this file. I guess people have skipped over the part
where I said I do not have the disks since my windows xp was preloaded. The
file does not exist anywhere in my pc. I confused it with another file in my
system directory that had a trojan virus, and I deleted it. Stupid, yes of
course!! Yet the problem is I have 2 very angry kids, and one really pissed
off wife. Someone please just extract and attach the file to an email to
(e-mail address removed) If that is even possible? Is that possible?-
Thanx 4 Your Help

Sorry Eddie, not only is that not possible but it is also not legal. I doubt
anyone in this forum would do that.

HAVING SAID THAT: I did read your original post, and believe that the advice
you were given about extracting from the original CD should work with the
System Restore CD that you have. If it does not, I recommend you contact
your hardware vendor who should be able to help you.

Thanks Mitch.

I didn't think it legal or possible. Yet I am screwed. If the recovery disk
has that ability I wouldn't know how to do it. I received 3 disks one being
"advanced recovery, diagnostic tools" the other 2 as a set which give only
one option, wipe out and start over. The former allows you to download the
drivers, and run tests. Unless I'm missing something? I guess I will have to
reinstall xp from a retail set. Unless somebody out THERE, can help.

It's my pleasure Eddie.

On one of those three CDs you will have a directory - probably called i386
or Windows or something that looks familiar - that contains the necessary
file. In a previous post someone gave you the procedures to extract the
necessary file. Go back and look for those instructions, and then on the CDs
that you have find the necessary directory. You will be better off than
having to go out and buy a retail package.

If all else fails I would recommend backing up your data and files to
another system, and then reinstalling from the Recovery CDs. However I do
not feel that would be at all necessary.

Good luck!

Mitch

In these days of viruses and other malware spead all over the
internet, you would have to be very foolish to accept an
executable file sent to you by a stranger. It would be much wiser
to ask for the file from a friend.

O.K. guys, that's great so far. Thanx!!!!! Now one more thing, I hope. I
still cannot access "Add or Delete Programs" same gray box saying can't find
rundll32.exe, anybody know why?

You are so right Ken, yet if that were to happen I would only open an
attachment from one such expert as yourself whom would neither have malice
nor ill intent for one such as myself. Now say this did happen, and the
attachment was first scanned, and say I did install it into the
windows\system32\, and say I was again able to access my set programs and
defaults which means it works. Do you know why my add or delete program still
does not? Do you know what file manages the add or delete program?

Anyway, Thanks so much to those who did. The resolution to my problem, for
the last 4 days mind you, was for a friend to attach the missing file to an
email. Then I placed it into a couple files and PRESTO!!!!, my puter is fine.
Not Orthodox, but effective. I'll be around, learning from you guys, and
girls. Thanx!!!

That one you mentioned in \i386 should be the good one, once you have
got rid of the infection

But be aware that anyone can sign anyone else's name to a
newsgroup posting.

I'm sure that very few, if any, people here have any ill intent
for you, and the chances of getting virus sent to you this way
may be slight. But it's *not* zero.

Now say this did
happen, and the attachment was first scanned,

Don't make the mistake of thinking that virus scanning guarantees
the absence of malware. The best it can do is reduce the risk
substantially. Even if you downloaded the latest virus
definitions this morning, you are not protected against this
afternoon's new viruses.

Your point is noted Ken. I have and it was at advise from some like yourself,
downloaded Ad Aware, Stinger, and Spyware Blaster. I hope these programs will
help keep this from happening again. But, as you say they probably can't
produce
*zero* protection.
