Valid Windows File?

Is Windows\system32\rundll32.exe. a valid windows file. For some reason I can
not access my add or delete program because of a warning screen which states
the following.

Windows cannot find file c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe.

I cannot also acces set programs and defaults. So you know I'm in a mess.

I have tried everything from changing the source path in the registry, to
trying to copy from one file (c:\i386) to system 32, which my searches only
find rundll 32, and not a file rundll32.exe. and a number of other things
that some here have advised.

The main problem is my windows xp is from the oem and I have no disk other
than a general recovery disk. Which if I run will wipe out thousands of video
and media files. That would take forever to back up on disks.

If you have advise, please be able to advise me in "laymans" terms. I am
not good with this thing, but it needs fixed. I have contacted the oem with
no reply from them. Their support system has not emailed me with any advise.
Could it be nobody knows what the heck I should do?

Yes it is a valid operating system file. You can expand a new copy from the
Windows XP install CD-Rom.

From a command prompt you can expand the file. An example;

expand E:\I386\rundll32.ex_ %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe
would expand a new copy to the \system32 directory.

Also you'll want to use the correct version for the service pack level
you're at. So you may need to extract the file from a service pack.

To extract the service pack files without installing them, execute
J:\WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe /x

Then when prompted, specify a directory to hold the extracted files.

Thank you for the advise, again though I have no xp disk. When you say it may
be extracted from my service pack, in this case sp2, is this something I can
do without a xp disk? And if so please explain how, pretty please.

Yes you can and yes I did explain. Post back any questions.

Windows cannot find file c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe.

I have tried everything from changing the source path in the registry, to
trying to copy from one file (c:\i386) to system 32, which my searches only
find rundll 32, and not a file rundll32.exe. and a number of other things
that some here have advised.

Rundll32.exe is a central system service file which should certainly be
in windows\system32 (and is about 32K), What may have happened is that
some malicious software has damage the working 'Path' reference (not
that source path) so it is not looking in that folder. Check in Control
Panel - System - Advanced, click Environmental variables, highlight the
Path item in the lower pane and click Edit. It should start off with
%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\system32\WBEM
and maybe more - added by software you installed. But make sure you
have those *up front*
And then put the rundll32.exe from \i386 in system32, and I would remove
the rundll 32 one, which may be an infector. Then consult advice, eg
