i have a hp with xp on it
i am having trouble with keeping the computer on
it loads up ok but as soon as i get going with something it restarts itself

Hardware problems are the most likely cause, especially over heating for the CPU.
First thing to check is the cooling fans. Remove the side cover and make sure all fans are running.
If the fans are okay, have a tech check the power supply. HP uses undersized power supplies and
they frequently fail under load.
(If you need a new PS, expect $$'s as most HP computers use a custom size power supply that is
expensive to replace.)
