Need help solve Internet acccess issues

I've just upgraded the OS on my PC to Win XP Professional SP2. I also have
NIS2006 installed. After the upgrade accessing Internet has been intermittent
and frustrating. I am using adsl broadband through a router. Email access
using Outlook Express 6 is OK but not newsgroups and any web pages. Sometimes
after a reboot I could access. When problem happens, EMail is still OK and I
am able to Ping the router but not beyond it. Any help will be appreciated.

Do you have Windows Firewall running along with NIS?

First, isolate the problem- plug your computer directly into the modem,
bypassing the router. Turn off Windows Firewall and NIS Firewall and
whatever options you can. Start adding in the NIS options if that's what's
you intend on running full time. If you don't have any problems, put the
router back in the mix and see what happens.

Don't run both the Windows Firewall and NIS together- neither MS or Norton
recommend it.

Good Luck,
Fitz

Your ADSL router should have NAT built-in which provides a very
effective firewall protection, at least for short term testing.

Get rid of Norton completely (permanently would be best in my view)
and make sure the Windows firewall is also turned off. Ignore (for
now) the Security Center warnings.

Check for web access. If it is there then reinstall your Norton and
check again.

And if it is not working then do a Repair Install of your Windows XP
per the instructions at

Good luck
