ADSL lockup when unattended

Michael

Hi, can anyone advise?

I am using a generic Sempron PC running Windows XP Pro, accessing ADSL
through a Draytek 2500 modem/router.

I have noticed that if I leave the PC on and unattended for anything more
than about a half-hour, when I come back and try to access the internet, it
invariably fails. Even PING doesn't work.

I have to reboot the PC to get access to the internet again.

I am also using AVG antivirus, and Zonealarm.

Any ideas as to why the access to the net should fail like this?

Any ideas appreciated.

thanks,
Michael

Try this.....
If you are using a NIC and not USB you might want to set your device
preferences.
Un-Check "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" on
the Power Management Tab in the Device Properties of your NIC.

Also.....
If you are using PPPoE for your Routers connection to ISP you might
want to change to "Keep Alive" instead of "Connect on Demand".

Hi, and thank you.

The NIC was indeed programmed to switch off to save power.

Also I (suspect I) needed to tick a box marked "always on" on the router.

Hope that solves the problem.

Thank you again,
:)
