need help re-installing w2k

After a number of attempts to "repair" w2k on my machine,
I finally decided to do a clean install. I followed the
procedure and re-formatted the partition (I dual boot with
W98se) after being required to delete the partition before
it would re-format. The install seemed to go fine all the
way through until the last re-boot when it goes into
setup. At this point I get a screen "Please insert the
Compact Disk labeled 'Service Pack 3" into your CD ROM.
You can also click OK if you want files copied from an
alternate location, such as a floppy disk.

OK gets the next screen which says "The file 'NT5INF.CAT'
on Service Pack 3 CD is needed. Type the path where the
file is located, and then click OK." The defaulted address
in the window is I:\i386. There is a file at I:\i386
\Nt5inf.ca_ on the w2k pro disk, but typing it's address
in fails to do anything as far as I can tell. Clicking OK
any number of times just makes it blink, but no action
results. Cancel brings a screen which says Fatal
Error. "An error has been encountered that prevents Setup
from continuing. Setup failed to install the product
catalogues. This is a fatal frror. The Setup log files
should contain more information. Press OK to view the
Setup log files."

System Setup log -(D:\WINNT\setuperr.log)

Error:
The I:\I386\NT5INF.CAT catalog file could not be found.
The error code is 1. This is a fatal error.
Incorrect function.
***
Error:
The signature for Windows 2000 Professional Setup is
invalid. The error code is 1.
Incorrect function.
***
Fatal Error:
Setup failed to install the product catalogues. This is a
fatal error. The setup log files should contain more
information.
***

Closing this screen re-boots the system and the whole
thing repeats.

I downloaded the sp3express.exe file and tried to get it
to read in but it will not respond as an address or as an
executable (gets a link error when it tries to execute).
How can I get my system to re-install? I have been playing
with it now for about 10 hours, but I can't get beyond
this point. My Win98se is still working OK. I have loaded
the recovery console into the system but I am not clever
enough to use it at this point. I have no idea what the
messages mean about the signature being invalid.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you, Joseph. You got me on the right track. I found
that my CD reader was at fault. As soon as I placed the
disk in my hp CDRW and re-initiated the program setup the
system set up with no problem. I would not have thought of
this since both CD units have worked fine in normal
applicaations for some time. Thanks again, Willy.
