need help installing xp

i have been trying to upgrade to xp, serval times i get
error 514ff58h and have also recieved error 0x000008e,
what do they mean,

Are you doing an upgrade install (installing the new operating system
over the old operating system) or a clean install (formatting the hard
drive first)? If the former, try the latter. If the latter, then test
your RAM and hard drive for errors, in that order.
