XP Help

Situation:
While upgrading from win/me to win/xp, only after serval
attempts did I perform a Clean Install. When all was said
and done XP came up fine, but I can not find my microsoft
word docuements.
Of course there was no backup.

The question:
Are those docs lost forever or are they in some hidden
file.

Please advise.
