i plug in microphone to computer with windows 2000
professional but can't hear/record voice in Sound
Recorder ! any idea ???

make sure it works on another computer, see if it needs batteries, in the
volume control select or un-mute it, increase the sensitivity, maybe turn on
the preamp.

Do the simple things first = Start.settings, control panel,Sounds and
Multimedia.
Double click and go for audio, microphone a make sure it is checked
and that the volume is up.
I am sure that will be it.

the preamp is on the advanced controls for the microphone, labeled 'Mic
Boost'.

if that doesn't do it you should probably make sure you got the latest
drivers.

thanks dave, i tried the preamp. also checked for any new
driver update for my computer, and there isn't any. now
the question is, do i need to "install" microphone ? does
it mean the microphone is not plug-n-play ?

you install the sound card, that normally includes all the ins and outs of
the card. so if your speakers are working to play other stuff you should
have the microphone input. on the windows volume control it may not show
you the microphone volume control by default, but if you found the advanced
button for the booster that isn't a problem. my only other questions might
be if your card for some reason doesn't have a mic input and its really a
line-in jack instead, those are made for higher level inputs like from
external cd players. there is also the outside chance that either the card
or the jack is broke. is this a new computer, used, laptop, or what?? what
kind of sound card, on the mother board or separate card??
