Name Listings

P

P Fruin

Fix the name listing field! Prompt for first, middle and last name - and
Prefix (not Title!- you've got thatcovered later!) and Suffix. Then list by
last name and give us ability to sort on first name if we need it! You have
this SO screwed up now it dosn't make any sense! But then a great deal of
this program has that problem! You old users understand I'm sure! I hated the
way ACT! had abandoned us small users but MS hs not done much better given
the incredible amount of time I've wasted to learn this - often to only
discover I can't do what I want or it is so counter intuitive that I have to
come here time after time to ask for help!

Hi Fruin,

It is hard to understand what your problem is? Can you please clarify with
reproducible steps?

Sat,

I guess my response went into Neverland as I didn't get an indication that
it posted! So, let's try again.

The problem is that when you start a New Contact in BCM, you are brought to
the Contact page and the cursor is on the "Full Name" field. Intuitively, I
would think that you simply type in a person's name - first name followed by
last. When you do this, BCM records them in the reverse order - the first
becomes the last and the last becomes the first. (Now maybe there IS some
buried way to change this but it seems to me it should be the default!) I was
suggesting that if you have an automatic entry function, which is good!, then
put the names in the right fields. Alternatively, bring up the full name box
immediately when you start a New Contact and let the user fill in all the
fields they choose to - "Title", First, Middle, Last names and the "Suffix".
Why has Microsoft suddenly become infatuated with pull down or click "menu
options" (Vista and now the 2007 Word and Excel updates) where you have to do
additional key strokes to perform a function that could be done just as
easily by showing from the get go? Just give it to us the first time!

Now regarding the "Title" and "Suffix" fields. What I was saying here is
that when I enter name data and see a Title option, I'm thinking a contacts
work title - which is of course included lower in the Contact fields. You
should use the correct terms for these fields - "Title" is Salutation (which
most people probably DO know) and "Suffix" is Valediction (which most people
probably don't know!). So, I'm not sure what you do about Valediction but it
seems to me that Microsoft should be using correct terminology? I think some
schools might still teach this?

There are two different fields in Outlook contacts: Full Name and File
As. Full Name displays "Luther Blissett", and File As is populated by
default as "Blissett, Luther", but that default can be overwritten.

Dictionary says: a valediction is a farewell speech; a salutation is a
greeting.

I expect Outlook is following comman usage, as understood by hoi
polloi, instead of going for classicist sesquipedalia verba.

Luther,

When I enter Paul Fruin in Full Name, it DOES display it as such but if you
click the Full Name button that shows the individual fields, it shows Fruin
as the First Name and Paul as the Last Name! What's that all about?

As for the File As field, When I enter Paul Fruin above, the two options it
gives me are Paul, Fruin or Fruin Paul. That's not correct either Luther! It
should read either Fruin, Paul or Paul Fruin.

Regarding "valediction", I guess I should have checked with Webster first.
But Yahoo, Wikipedia and Education.answerbox.net all say that valediction is
the opposite of salutation.

When I do the same, pressing the Full Name button shows First: Paul,
and Last: Fruin. Both with Outlook Contacts and BCM Business Contacts.

Is BCM behaving differently from Outlook on your machine?

Do you have USA versions of Outlook, BCM, and Vista? Have you made any
changes to the Locale settings?

In the phrase "Dear Professor Fruin III", the word dear is the
salutation, professor the title, and III the suffix.

I understand valediction to be an antonym of salutation, in the sense
that the valediction "goodbye" is to the salutation "howdy".

Thanks again Luther. I think we're nailing something down here. How do I
ascertain whetherI have US versions of Outlook, BCM and Vista? I've more and
more been wondering if I could have some kind of a "corrupted" copy of Office
or at least BCM? Since I migrated from ACT! back in November, I'm still
unable to do Mail Merges. Every time I try and Select Recipients, I get a
messge saying "Unable to obtain list of tables from the data source"! I just
keep runing into things like this and it makes me think something is
definitely not right with all this! Now you tell me that we are both doing te
same thing but getting different results? It's obvious my BCM is working
differently than yours! I don't even know where the "Locale settings" are -
so as far as I know, I've made no changes in them! I've uninstalled and
reinstalled Outlook and that didn't help anything. So, how do I figure out if
I have a bad copy or something? HELP!

P Fruin

Luther,

Are you going to reply to this? I still desperately need an answer to this?
Could I have been THE one schmuck in all the world who was unlucky enough to
get a bad copy of this or can we find a solution to these issues? Help!

Paul,

You are not the only one. We were seeing the same behavior with the "Full
Name" as well. Just as you said, intuitively, I entered the full name first
name first, then, last name. Go to phone list view of business contacts and
it shows reversed in the full name column. Funny thing is, when I just
tested it to confirm, it worked fine. So, I don't know if there's been a
recent service pack or hotfix for this. I'll keep an eye on it.

Hey Luther,

Is there a chance you could answer the question I had two and three threads
up? Sure would appreciate that. I continue to have these problems and if I
have a bad copy, I'd like to know how to get it replaced? Can you or ANYONE
help with a suggestion here? This is VERY frustrating after five + months!
Thanks!

I'm afraid I don't read every posting in the newsgroup. I just browse
it when I have time looking for new tidbits of information on how BCM
works.

You can find information about the installed BCM, including the
locale, in the Registry in
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Business Solutions eCRM

With Vista and Office I'm not sure. These days they're supposed multi-
locale; you may buy a USA version, but you can then switch them to
work in another locale, and they'll download the necessary
dictionaries, fonts, and so forth. That's one reason the packages are
so large.

I believe Office's current UI locale is in
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\LanguageResources
\InstalledUIs
1033 is English USA.

There's an applet in Control Panel to manage Window's current locale.
