Hello,
I'm a first time user with this newsgroup, however I'm
hoping I can get the answers that I am looking for. I had
a computer made for me by someone at work. There is no
problem with the system, in fact it runs very good. My
problem is that I want to change the names the person
used when they installed my software. Some are quite
offensive and I need to know how to and where to go to
change the names that the programs have when they first
open up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

It would help to know the names of the programs. E.g. if Office, you can change
it from Word, go to Tools>Options>User Information. If you change it there it
will change it for all installed Office Programs.

First off, my gut feeling is your friend has handed you a fully loaded
system, filled with pirate software ... hence the collection of bogus
registration names, and their associated serial numbers.

If you've come to the Microsoft groups looking for help with pirate
software, let me just say, as diplomatically as I can, that it is a
serious error in judgment.

If on the other hand, you have all of the original installation CD's (as
you should) then it is simply a question or re-installing the apps and
providing your name (and serial numbers) where appropriate.

Occasionally this will not work, as certain software does not clean up
after itself properly when uninstalled, and unfortunately this will mean
going through the registry looking for the registered name keys and
changing them manually. For each application this will be in a separate
location, but is most likely in:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\<appname>
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
somewhere.

If you are genuine, then you need to investigate the legality of the
software installed on your system, and take corrective measures.

/end lecture.

Thanks John for answering. The programs are all the
Microsoft Office, however they placed the name I want to
change in the position where the name for the company
goes. Right under my name.

Thanks [H]omer. Point well taken. I wanted to avoid
reinstallation because I'm not the savyest computer whiz.
I was hoping there was some other kind of quick fix but
it looks like it will be more than I bargined for. Thanks

Hi,

For Office XP:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Installer\Userdata\SID\Products\GUID\InstallProperties

In the left pane change: RegOwner and RegCompany

Once done, naviagate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\UserInfo

And rename it: OldUserInfo

Once done navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Data and delete the
Data subkey in the left pane.

For Office 2000

Office 2000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Uninstall\{00000409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}]

Office 2000
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common]

I have Office 2000, and the value in question is named 'RegCompany' under this registry key:
'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\9
04010001E872D116BF00006799C897E\InstallProperties'

The long ID # might vary for a different version of Office.
