OFFICIAL RAM BLUEBOOK VALUATION

Hi,

This MYSTERY is a tough one . . .

My system is PC-based, Windows 98SE, 256MB RAM, IE6 and OE6 with 56K
dial-up.

All software is latest and greatest available via MS downloads and upgrades
courtesy of http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

When I click on the icon for OE or IE, my dial-up connection is invoked and
the software dials into my ISP and I am connected. This is good.

Unfortunately, in off-line mode, when I click on other icons on my desktop,
Norton WinDoctor, for example, before loading the icon's software, my
dial-up connection is invoked and the software dials into my ISP. Before
connecting, I typically CANCEL the dial-up, close the Dial-up Connection
window, and then the icon's software loads properly.

I checked the PROPERTIES of all my desktop icons thinking there was an
operator or some other instruction added to the Target: or Start in: lines,
but nothing has been added - these lines are okay.

I have no idea why this is happening as I can not trace it to any software
that I have loaded. In fact, I have not loaded any software for several
months and I clean my system ENTIRELY on a daily basis (i.e. cookies, TIFs,
WinTEMP, etc.)

Any thoughts MS-MVPs???

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Brian Gervais

Are the programs you're starting that invoke your dialup connection perhaps
ones that are set to automatically check for updates?

If that's the case your options would seem to be either to disable the
"check for updates" function of the individual programs or to disable the
"dial a connection" feature in Internet properties.

SOLUTION . . .

IE properties, advanced, scroll to bottom under the secruity area, remove
check marks from "Check for publisher's certificate revocation" and "Check
of server certificate revocation". Reboot.

ALL IS WELL AGAIN.

MUST HAVE BEEN A SETTING THAT CHANGED DURING ONE OF MY MS IE UPDATES.

Check for publisher's certificate revocation - UNCHECKED [this one was the
key]

Check of server certificate revocation - WAS ALREADY UNCHECKED

THANKS AGAIN ! ! !

Best regards,

Brian )
