mysteriously sudden slow computer

S

seeeker

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 at 2.2 with 1 GB RAM and 20 GB free on a
120 GB hard drive. XP SP1

All of a sudden the computer is running at ½ to ¼ speed.

Even bootup is taking twice as long.

Although downloads from the internet are their usual speed.

I have run Adaware and Spybot each a couple of times, and removed
everything they recommended.

I haven't defragged, but XP says it's 9% and I don't need to. I would
do so anyway, but it would take several hours I think at the slow
speeds. In my non-expert opinion, I can't imagine 9% fragmentation
would all of a sudden slow up the computer so drastically.

I've uninstalled everything I can remember I installed around the time
the slowup started (last Tuesday night, the 27th).

XP offered me no restore points which were prior to the slowup

I looked at startup in msconfig and everything still checked seems to
be a valid thing I need from a program I recognize.

Advice would be much appreciated!

(Also -- If anyone knows of a supercompetent and honest consultant I
could hire to fix this over the phone, or by remote access to my
computer, that would be great!)

........Further, I would open msconfig, thru RUN dialogue, and see if there
is anything in Startup that is an unfamiliar process that may be Starting
when you boot into Windows.

You must defrag the drive.

You don't mention anti-virus software, just spyware. Running an up to date
anti-virus scan with a decent program would seem sensible. And you don't say
you have a firewall installed. Again sensible and not having an up to date
one could help your machine to be attacked. There are free anti-virus
programs and firewalls available.

"XP says it's 9%"

Of what? Of all? It will include files never accessed so the files accessed
will be fragmented far more than 9%! The same applies to the advice that
you do not need to defragment.

You have minimal free disk spage ( 16% ) for a satisfactory level of
performance. Try to get it higher!

To investigate how you are using hard disk space you need to make sure that
you can see all files. Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View,
Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and
folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files " is
unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should
also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types"
is not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is selected
and then select View, Choose Details and check before Name, Type, Total
Size, and Free Space.

You still will not see the System Volume Information folder.
How to Gain Access to the System Volume Information Folder
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;309531

FileSize -a useful tool for use with Windows Explorer when investigating how
disk space is being used.
http://markd.mvps.org/

The download link is not obvious. Click the here in the two sentences of the
web page accessed through the link above. "I can't count the number of times
someone has asked for this. So here is a module you can install that shows a
Folder Size column in Explorer."

To increase you free space on your C select Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and
remove all but the latest System Restore points? Restore points can be quite
large.

You should use Disk CleanUp regularly to Empty your Recycle Bin and
Remove Temporary Internet Files. Whenever you remove redundant files you
should always run Disk Defragmenter by selecting Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System Restore on
your C partition which is over generous. I would reduce it to 700 mb. Right
click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and select System Restore.
Place the cursor on your C drive select Settings but this time find the
slider and drag it to the left until it reads 700 mb and exit. When you get
to the Settings screen click on Apply and OK and exit.

Are you using any Norton Utilities?

If your hard drive is formatted as NTFS another potential gain arises with
your operating system on your C drive. In the Windows Directory of your
C partition you will have some Uninstall folders in your Windows folder
typically: $NtServicePackUninstall$ and $NtUninstallKB282010$ etc.

These files may be compressed or not compressed. If compressed the
text of the folder name appears in blue characters. If not compressed
you can compress them. Right click on each folder and select Properties,
General, Advanced and check the box before Compress contents to
save Disk Space. On the General Tab you can see the amount gained
by deducting the size on disk from the size. Folder compression is
only an option on a NTFS formatted drive / partition.

Another default setting on a large drive which could be wasteful is that for
temporary internet files especially if you do not store offline copies on
disk. The default allocation is 3% of drive. Depending on your attitude to
offline copies you could reduce this to 1% or 2%. In Internet Explorer
select Tools, Internet Options, General, Temporary Internet Files, Settings
to make the change. At the same time look at the number of days history
is held.

The default allocation for the Recycle Bin is 10 % of drive. On your drive
5% should be sufficient. In Windows Explorer place the cursor on your
Recycle Bin, right click and select Properties, Global and move the slider
from 10% to 5%.

Driver problems can impact on start up times. Are there any yellow question
marks in Device Manager? Right click on the My Computer icon on your
Desktop and select Properties. Hardware, Device Manager. If yes what is
the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What drivers
are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for the last boot and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Download CCleaner and clean up the drive. The built in defragmenter is
too slow. you can download this which is much faster and free and run a
defrag.

Thanks for all the replies! I certainly have my work cut out for me.

Yes, I have run Norton antivirus regularly and I'm clean. I do have a
firewall.

I'm not using Norton utilities.

The computer was not slow at all when I had only 5% of the disk space
free. Now I've gotten it up to 17% and still 1/4 to 1/3 speed, so I
don't think taking any more stuff off the hard drive is going to
triple or quadruple the speed.

It's something systemic I think.

I don't really care that much about the startup time, I only mentioned
it because that slowness arose along with the computer slowness.

I used to back up the hard drive in 4 hours, now it wasn't even done
in 12. Norton antivirus used to take 1 hour, now close to 3. Movies
play erratically. It's like the 2.2 speed chip has slowed down
drastically.

Would anyone be able to prioritize all the suggestions? In other
words, what things should I do first, that are most likely to be the
problem, and/or would have the most bang for the buck?

You mention a frewall and an anti-virus program, but you say nothing about
anti-spyware programs. These days, spyware is perhaps the most likely cause
of problems like those you describe.

Run Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware, and Microsoft AntiSpyware. No, just
one of them isn't enough.

I used Spybot and Adaware, I guess I could add the Microsoft one.

Before I read Gerry's post, I put online a page with pictures of my
Task Manager and msconfig start up:
http://users.adelphia.net/~seekerfor/troubleshooting.htm

I was hoping someone knowledgable, unlike me, could tell from looking
at them what's running that's slowing down the computer.

I need to emphasize that this was sudden.

Monday night Jan 2 it was fine.

Tuesday night it was 1/4 speed.

So at least in my layman's mind, I'm discounting that it was too full
a hard drive, or an un-defragmented drive, since the performance
didn't really deteriorate slowly over time as the drive got filled up
and fragmented.

So something bad happened between Monday night and Tuesday night, is
my impression.

I had a look at the list of things running and starting up.
It is possible to have the imogedrive without all the icon stuff running
in the background. I didn't install the imogadrive software on Win98 and
it worked with out all that extra.
Are you using AOL? There is wanmpsvc.exe which is an AOL service as one
of the processes.
I just searched with Google on the various names that I didn't recognize
but you sure have a lot of 'stuff' <grin>
Do you need the Acrobat reader starting up?
You might just search on the .exe processes running since you know
what's on your machine and decide if that part of the software needs to
be running. For example there is a cd management thing as part of the
sound board software and I interpreted the description of it to be that
it was a feature for older versions of Windows. If you don't use it then
is it necessary would be my guideline.

Thanks for the additional replies.

I've defragged the hard drive.

Folders open quicker, and websites open a bit faster.

But programs like SoundForge and Drive Image are still at ¼ speed,
while Norton anti-virus is still at 1/3 speed.

In Safe Mode, things are a bit faster, but still essentially ¼ to 1/3
speed.

I put online a jpg of windows task manager processes in safe mode.
http://users.adelphia.net/~seekerfor/troubleshooting2.htm

I unchecked in msconfig everything and booted up in normal mode.
Still the same slow speed on the computer.

I put online a jpg of what was running in task manager at that point.
http://users.adelphia.net/~seekerfor/troubleshooting2.htm

Does windows task manager show EVERTHING running on my computer, or
can viruses, spyware etc be running without being in task manager?

Every time I run spybot after surfing, the same tracking cookies
appear.

I put a jpg of those online.
http://users.adelphia.net/~seekerfor/troubleshooting2.htm

Could tracking cookies be causing my computer to run at 1/3 to ¼
speed?

Can my P4 2.2 chip be damaged, and running slow?

Could my 1 GB of RAM be not working completely?

Please, could the most expert people help me?

Thanks!!

Time to look at the hardware. First go to Device Manager and see if your
drives are using PIO Mode instead of a DMA mode. Here is a link to
information by MVP Hans-Georg Michna which will explain that and offer
some solutions:

http://www.michna.com/kb/WxDMA.htm

After you check out the PIO/DMA issue, post back with the results. I
would also troubleshoot the power supply and the hard drives (with a

OK, I did a lot of work:

I ran bootvis, can't understand the graphs. It does say "Warning,
disk cache writing is disabled", which sounds bad. What do I do about
that?

I can't understand this related article:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=332023

The Bootvis file is 63MB. If someone wants, I can put it only if I
know it will be looked at.

This page says to uncheck it anyway:
http://www.accucadd.com/TechNotes/Cache/WriteBehindCache.htm#XP

I went and looked, and mine is checked! So why did Bootvis say it's
disabled?

Please advise.

What is not normal, very obviously, is mpegs, avi's, etc, which are

A question asked with all respect: am I wrong to be reluctant to use a

safe?

When I go to dictionary.com, I get a popup window that says Windows

Bootvis was a tool made available by Microsoft to check for reasons
why some users had overlong boot times. The tool was withdrawn
by Microsoft.

The KB 332023 Article is difficult to understand. It is primarily
directed to explaining a fix for Windows 2000, included in the SP3
update. It says the fix is not being offered for the bug as it occurs
in Windows XP. It seems the other link you supplied pre-dates
KB 332023, so the advice may no longer be relevant to Windows
2000. I do not know what value is to be placed upon it's application
today with regard to Windows XP.

As I said Bootvis has been withdrawn. It could be that it's advice
rgearding Write Caching is incorrect. It conflicts with what you are
seeing elsewhere on your system. Perhaps this setting is being
changed after Bootvis checks it out. What affect does unchecking
Write Caching have with regard to your problems?

The way I see it Event ID: 20169 may be a consequence of an
earlier problem. This could be the situation reported by Event ID:
20106. The CLSID {56035B18-DF83-483C-A812-43DD699A38A4}
is not one I can identify ( identifying can be difficult unless you have
direct access to the computer ).

Try Start, Run, type "regedit" with out the quotes and hit ENTER.
Place the cursor on My Computer and use Edit, Find, search
criteria 56035B18-DF83-483C-A812-43DD699A38A4 and see
if you can identify the name of the application / programme
associated with this CLSID

There is a link giving more information in the Error Report. Click
on the link and post a copy here.

Event ID: 4609 indicates you were working in safe mode and this
is why the service requested was not available.

The unsigned files may relate to the problem. Drivers are
designed to work with an operating system and when the user
upgrades they can cease to work as they should. Uninstalling
the software and related hardware may highlight the cause of
the problem by a noticeably improved system performance
and absence of error reports.

ctl3d32.dll The date on this file is odd. I would expect a much
later date. Try Start, Run, type "sfc /scannow" without quotes
and hit Enter.

Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System

After doing this reboot the computer and see if things have

rasdd.dll and rasui.dll are printer drivers. As are bvrpwf2000.dll
and bvrpwf2000.gpd. What printers are connected to your
computer or are connected over your network? Which are
accessed over your network?

The three oembios files would appear to relate to AVG. Are
you using a Free Version or a purchased version? They are not
reported as unsigned on my system. I would uninstall and install
the latest version.

prn2pdf.dll and prn2mail.dll are unknown. Are you using an email
programme known as 2 Mail?

The three snagit files relate to Snagit. Uninstall and observe the
effect. There are many better known alternatives.

Microsoft Anti-Spyware resides here causing no problems. There
were problems a year back but these seem to be ironed out.

FrontPage 2000 SRI. The answer is uninstall and reinstall. That's
the way to find out.

Thanks for your thorough reply!

Some additional symptoms/info:

Uploading and downloading large files to my remote server goes at
normal speed.

MusicMatch conversion of .wav's to mp3's goes at normal speed.

Movies stall and are herky-jerky with all players.

Even in Eudora, the little blue bar that grows as messages are sent,
or received -- it too is herky jerky. But the message gets sent as
fast as usual, it's just that graphic that looks screwy.

However, recall that programs that don't rely on graphics at all, like
SoundForge, are running at 1/3 to 1/4 speed.

On to your suggestions:

It says ServiceName, and then REG_SZ.

I don't know what ServiceName means, other than a class, according to
my Google search.

The search results also include Default REG_SZ value not set, and
Description REG_SZ 1394 adapter.
There is a link giving more information in the Error Report. Click
on the link and post a copy here.

The problem occurs when I'm not connected to the internet, so I don't
think this has anything to do with my problem. Do you agree?

After doing this reboot the computer and see if things have
changed.

OK -- I did this, the progress bar was complete, and then that
progress bar window just disapppeared. Then I rebooted.

Unfortunately, it didn't help.
rasdd.dll and rasui.dll are printer drivers. As are bvrpwf2000.dll
and bvrpwf2000.gpd. What printers are connected to your
computer or are connected over your network? Which are
accessed over your network?

No printers are connected. Should I delete these? How?
The three oembios files would appear to relate to AVG. Are
you using a Free Version or a purchased version? They are not
reported as unsigned on my system. I would uninstall and install
the latest version.

I don't have this program on my computer. Should I delete these
files? How?
prn2pdf.dll and prn2mail.dll are unknown. Are you using an email
programme known as 2 Mail?

No, should I delete these? If so, how?
The three snagit files relate to Snagit. Uninstall and observe the
effect. There are many better known alternatives.

It's been on my system for months. Could it all of a sudden on Jan 2
start causing problems?

What are the better alternatives?
Microsoft Anti-Spyware resides here causing no problems. There
were problems a year back but these seem to be ironed out.

So I should try it I guess? OK, I will.
FrontPage 2000 SRI. The answer is uninstall and reinstall. That's
the way to find out.

Very tricky for me because of bad problems I had with installing it
years ago. Could this possibly be the cause of my computer suddenly
going very slow? If not, I'd prefer not to mess with it right now.

"Since Microsoft withdrew it, I assume I shouldn't try it's
Optimization option?"

I do not know why it was withdrawn.

"It says ServiceName, and then REG_SZ."

You are only looking for clues in the right window.
What is the full path i.e. the bit in the left window.
This is displayed immediately above the Desktop
Taskbar.

"REG_SZ 1394 adapter"

Network adapter.

What is the make and model of your Network Card?

"The problem occurs when I'm not connected to the internet, so I don't
think this has anything to do with my problem. Do you agree?"

It could a problem caused because there isn't a connection.

"OK -- I did this, the progress bar was complete, and then that
progress bar window just disappeared. Then I rebooted.

Unfortunately, it didn't help."

What is the version and date for ctl3d32.dll in the System folder
now. It was showing a 1995 modified date, which made no sense.

"No printers are connected. Should I delete these? How?"

To have no printer is most unusual. Please explain?

The three oembios files are not anything to do with AVG. They
are something to do with Windows XP -something to do with
OEM copies of Windows XP. I am a little surprised they are
unsigned. The copies on my system are signed.

"Snagit" It's been on my system for months. Could it all of a

Looking again it's not exactly what I thought it was. Check for

"FrontPage 2000 SRI."

You asked the question and I gave you the logical answer.
However, there could be a problem with the Windows Installer.

"When I go to dictionary.com, I get a popup window that says Windows
Installer wants to install Frontpage 2000 SR1. "

Make the error occur, note the exact text of the message, look in
Event Viewer for corresponding reports and post further details.

I would suggest you try cCleaner. It was suggested earlier but I am
not clear whether you tried it

With any cleaner you need to proceed with caution. I invariably
recommend creating a restore point before using cCleaner.
cCleaner also offers backup before removal.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your continued help and perserverence.

I ran the Microsoft antivirus beta. It found a couple of adware
things, which I removed, but that didn't help the speed issue.

It could a problem caused because there isn't a connection.

I should have said, "not only when" connected to the internet. The
problem occurs connected or not connected.

Still shows that date. It's in the System32 folder under Windows.

I don't have one that's working, and haven't for years.

I ran it and it didn't seem to find anything that could be causing a
sudden slowdown.

Should I use the registry part of it?
