Mysterious CPU usage

I monitor things through Task Manager on a regular basis, and my cpu usage
has always been around 1 to 3% with all programs closed and Anti-virus and
firewall apps running.
Now, for some reason, TM is showing anywhere from 17 to 20% cpu usage under
the same conditions.
I've checked all of the obvious things in the registry, MSCONFIG, etc., and
even shut down anti-virus and firewall apps. Still around 20% is being used
for something.
I know there are some free apps. available for showing more details of what
is using what in more detail........I can't remember what they were.
Any suggestions or other ideas appreciated.
Thanks

Here's one you can try.

Process Explorer for Windows v10.21
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Right click an entry you want more info on and select
Properties from the menu.

If you need help in identifying entries, take a look here,

TASK LIST PROGRAMS

Startup Applications List

WinTasks Process Library

Good luck

How about telling us which one of the processes is using so much of the CPU?
Merely posting that the total CPU usage has increased is not much help.

Process Explorer is a very handy thing to have...
