My xp looses network connections after some time

Hans Baumann

Hi everyone.

This is the problem:

I have a XP sp2 (all updates) in a domain with about 6-7 win 2k prof
clients, the domain server is win 2k server, when I log on everthing goes
OK, but if I leave the PC idle for about 15 minutes (say I make a long phone
call), It looses all the networks connections. I can't see any server, nor
enter my intranet either (it uses windows network authentication). I can
only connect to the SQL servers

This only happens to my computer, the others don't have that problem, so
logic says that is a windows xp configuration.

Where is that configuration? or am I wrong and I have to configure the w2k
server not to disconnect my xp client?

Thanks in Advance.

Go to the System applet in Control Panel and click on Hardware to get
Device Manager. Expand the network adapters category and find the entry
for your network card. Double-click it to get its Properties. Go to the
Power Management tab and uncheck "allow Windows to turn off this device
when not in use".

Thanks Malke, I tried your configuration, but it didn't solve my problem, It
has to be related to the protocol that uses windows to open
folders/files/etc on networks resources (map drives, shared folders, etc)
because, as I said, I can still use SQL Analyser to query data from my SQL
Server, more than that, I can still use my terminal client to connect to
those server that I can't via a shared folder for example.

The only solutions to solve this problems were:

- Restart my computer
- Close my session an log again
- If I'm accesing my computer via remote desktop (from home via VPN /
Remote desktop combination) I just have to disconnect, and when I connect
again to my computer I can use again all the network resources without
logging out in the remote computer.

To make it more strange, say that I'm connected to a server named A using
terminal client, I use it for about 15 minutes, then when I try to view the
files from my network map drive, It says that the local resource is already
being used - This connection can't be restablished. (I have it in spanish so
I can't give the exact traduction sorry) something similar happens when I
try to view files in \\A\sharedfolder

Any more suggestions? I tryed to look in other forums without success. I'm
still thinking that it has something to do with the protocol...

I'm sorry, I don't know. Perhaps one of the more expert network regulars
will have your answer. What is different about your computer from the
ones that don't have this problem?

This ocurrs when I log into the computer, but when I try to access my server
(via terminal or windows explorer, ping etc) I have no problem. (Again I
have it in spanish so the traduction may not be accurate).

Yes, I have this two message twice:

Event type: Error

Both error's appear twice (I cleaned the event log and restarted my computer

Apparently your physical network connection is having problems. I don't
know why you can connect to some things and not others. I'd swap out
cables and maybe even the NIC, and if that doesn't help it is time to
call in a local professional who can come on-site and take a look.
There is just so much that can be done in writing.

I'm sorry that I wasn't able to help you.

I have the same issues with a number of my clients computers. Other than 2
of them (which is why I am here), I have managed to fix and/or patch the
issue. Here's what I did.

1. Created a dos batch file that accesses the network share every 90 seconds
(make sure that you have a copy of choice.com from dos)
@echo off
cls
:THELOOP
TYPE nul |CHOICE.COM /N /CY /TY,90 >nul
DIR F:
GOTO THELOOP

2. On the workstation, in regedit, go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanworkstation\parameters
and add a DWORD key called autodisconnect with the hex value ffffffff
I also put it into
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters

3. Do #2 on the server and restart.

4. On the server, open a command prompt and type in
net config server /autodisconnect:-1

There are a couple of KB articles that deal with this problem 297684,
331519, 810907 are some of them.

Hope this helps... Now, if anyone can help ME when it still doesn't work, I
will be forever in your debt.

Hi David, Thanks a lot for the response, I have just configured my servers,
now I pray for this to work...

No prob,

Another 'solution' I came across has to do with Windows power-saving.

Open the Device Manager, then open the + sign next to your Network Adapters.
Double-click on the NIC and go to the Power Management Tab. Get rid of the
check next to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". OK
yourself out of everything (you'll lose yout network connection for a second
as the adapter is reconfigured).
