Windows 2000 Advanced Server with Windows XP Clients

Hi everybody,

I need help with networking of a win 2k server and win xp clients...

I have a small network of about 10-12 clients all being win xp pro
sp2...and win 2k advanced server installed on the server machine...

I configured the server as a file server..and connections to the server
work fine but from some PC's it takes too long and many times people
have to re-log on to the network to view the server drive. I have
created a domain name. Every computer on the network logs on to that
domain with their respective usernames and passwords. I have done this
so as to prevent access to our network from other offices located in my
building.

The other problem i face is very sluggish overall network
performance...All the computers dont connect to each other effectively.
Every time someone needs to re-log on the network. I have added all the
groups in the active directory to all the users so as to increase
network performance for eg. schema admins, admins, print
admins...etc...i have added all these groups and given all of them full
permissions but still the network performance is very sluggish.

It would be great if someone could solve my problem...I plan to assign
proper usage rights once my problems are solved...Please help !

In the first place, adding administrator permissions to user accounts to fix
access problems isn't the right answer - ever. Making sure that all shares
and servers have the correct permissions and that all users are member of
the correct ACLs is the way to fix that problem.

And in any case it won't fix slow network performance. Have you
investigated the possibility that a bad switch, network card(s) or cabling
could be causing your problem? I'd consider that far more likely than an AD
problem.

Finally, be sure all AD clients are using the AD DNS server to resolve names
and that the AD DNS server is using your ISP or root hints to resolve
outside names.
