My Windows XP is seriously mucked up

Last evening I installed DSL on my computer, including the Yahoo! SBC DSL
software. Afterward my computer has been nuts. Here are some of the problems:

(1) The recycle bin has disappeared from the desktop (my network places
appeared on the desktop)
(2) When I click on the start menu and all programs, the menu doesn't open.
(3) At various times when I right-click something or even just hit enter,
Windows Installer pops up with various programs
(4) At other times a dialog box pops up saying it is configuring Symantec
(5) When I tried to run msconfig, Windows said it could not find
(6) I ran in safe mode with command prompt to run system restore, and it
said that System Restore could not protect my computer. I've run it again,
and it says the same thing. I understand that system restore is/was probably
my best bet, but system restore isn't working!

My DSL connection works and I can go online, but my computer is in bad shape
otherwise. I contacted SBC, and they essentially said it couldn't possibly be
their software (I couldn't get "Keith" off of his script, so I gave up). Any
help from anyone is much appreciated.

Uninstall the Yahoo! SBC DSL software. See what happens.

I have cable, not DSL. No ISP software is needed for cable, ISPs offer it,
but it is a bunch of junk. Some ISP software even includes spyware.

Do you really need ISP software for your DSL connection to work?

I did a Google Search for Yahoo! SBC DSL. This was the first hit that
wasn't related to Yahoo or SBC.

The adventure continues. I tried to uninstall the software. Not happening. I
spoke with an SBC level two support rep, he agreed that it was a problem with
the SBC software, said that he was aware that there are conflicts with
certain manufacturers, including Dell, but that he couldn't figure out how to
help me since he couldn't find the programs that he thought were causing the
problem. There were two programs that were in Add/Remove Programs that he
asked me to remove, but he thought there should have been others. When I
clicked on remove to get rid of those two programs, error messages came up
and they disappeared from the list. But their program files remained.
Double-clicking an uninstall icon in one of those folders brought up a dialog
box telling me to use add/remove programs to uninstall - pretty troublesome
when those programs aren't on the add/remove list (and I can't get into my
start/all programs list, so I can't tell if there were uninstall icons in the
folders for those programs). The rep had me remove the folders, but that
doesn't get rid of all of the files in other folders, and it didn't change
anything. Eventually he gave up and said he'd try to get a manager to call me
(although he wasn't sure they actually would). Are there any more options?
