My USB Mp3 player will not show up in My Computer!?

Hi Everyone,
i have recently been given a mp3 player which I am having a problem with.
the previous owner did not have the problem as I have seen it plugged into
their computer with no problem.
When i plug the usb in I do not get the screen up that asks me what I want
to do next. I cannot see the device in My computer under a drive letter.
I have checked device manager and all is well.
I have assigned a letter to it in Disk Management but it still doesn't show
in my computer, plus when i restart computer the assigned letter has gone and
I'm back to square one. I can access the contents of the MP3 player from disk
management but without it showing in my computer i cannot add any new tracks
to it.
I have tried all usb ports on the computer (4 on back and 2 on front case)
and no joy with any of them. I have my cable modem plugged in via usb and
always works fine.
I have Windows Home XP with SP2 and my hard drive is a Maxtor 6L080L0.
Is there something obvious that i am doing wrong? Does anyone have any ideas
that I have not tried? Please it is driving me mad?!
Many Thanks In Advance
Maria

Try this one:
start in safe mode start regedit Hkey_local_machine>system>current control
set>services>sptd and erase everything under config and so on.
You might need to change your authorization by right clicking and allow
everything. It helped me.

Hi Tjosan,
Thanks for your post.
I'm sorry to be a pain but if you have time could you give me a step by step
guide to do what you suggested as I would know where to start and I am
desperate to try anything that might sort this problem out.
many thanks in advance

1. Start XP in safe mode by pushing F8 at start up.
2. Click start and run and write regedit and ok.
3. Click Hkey_local_machine
4. Click system
5. Click current_control_set
6. Click services
7. Click sptd
8. You might see three submenus
Cfg
Enum
Security
click each sub item and delete what's in it.

You might not be allowed to delete but if you right click each submenu
and browse down to authorization or something similar I don't have
the American so I don't know the excact wording for the last one but
this will change your authorization and allow you to delete.
Hope this helps

Hi Maria,

Since it's there I'm sure that's your problem.
Did you right click on the submenu for cfg and change
your permission to full control? Else you can't delete the
stuff you need to delete.

Don't give up, we are at the right track.

There's another thing I forgot during starting in safe
mode you need to push escape when you see at the bottom a question
if sptd.sys should be started or enabled or something like that.
Take care
