my Toshiba laptop won't record streaming audio

It has a Realtek HD sound card but everytime I open the volume control and
under Options->properties, select Realtek HD Audio input for the mixer
device, "adjust volume for recording" is selected. I click OK at the bottom,
the recording control interface loads, I select "line", turn the volume all
the way up, and when I load a program like MusicMatch or SoundForge, nothing
happens...even though I can hear the streaming audio through the speakers
just fine.

Is this a hardware problem, or software error? anyone know?

I use the exact same program with Windows 98, streaming audio, SoundForge
and there's not problem..

Like you, I have a Toshiba with RealtekHD and have been wrestling with
this same problem for months.

I've finally concluded (discovered) it is an XP thing. They
"simplified" the recording volume control features by removing some
mixer settings we NEED!

I've tried installing other audio mixer programs to get those
settings, but to no avail. I can record sounds via a number of
different programs but, like you, play them back with NO PLAY SOUND at
all. And these are files many megs large. I hear nothing.

I've tried all kinds of settings combinations until I've pulled hair
out. There's got to be a solution somewhere.
