My system is slow

Hi, I use a Packard BEll 2006 model lap top, two days back i played a DVD on
the laptop and the DVD was getting stuck while it was plaling and the DVD
kept running on the same mode for an hour as i didnt notice it. after that my
system has become really slow and even it i try playing an Mp3 file i get
broken music. the entire performance has come down. I ran a defragment and a
check disk even a virus scan but there is no change. Can anyone help me
rectify the issue. is it any hard ware complanint?.
