My save function seems to be disabled in Word 2003. Any ideas on

The save function in Word 2003 seems to have been disabled. This includes the
save as function. Any ideas on how to restore?

Do you still see the problem if you hold down Ctrl when starting Word? If yes,
then you have an Addin of some kind that's intercepting these commands (possibly
a virus).
