my problem with the service packs

thnx for the info on the service packs
i now undersand what they are but dont see there
relavance to my problem

i have cm0102 a directx 8.0 runnin game which claims not
to run on my xp system as it needs service pack 3 to run
direct x???

i dont understand what it needs as it worked on my old
comp which wan on windows 98 v2

any clues???

OK, this is apparently an old game and it is seeing XP as either NT or
Windows 2000. Try and run it in Compatibility Mode (see Help & Support
for details). If the game will not run in CM, then it apparently will
not run on Windows XP and you'll just need to accept that.

It is seeing XP as an NT system (it is - version 5.1) and is not able
to think of anything beyond NT version 4, for which it would need the
SP3 of that.

Use start - All Programs - Accessories - Program Compatibility Wizard.

Point that at the program to be run (you may need first to do it for the
setup, and later for the program itself), and tell it to run in
compatibility for Windows NT 4 Service Pack 5
