My Pictures folder says is empty but really it's not - weird

My Pictures folder has just recently become empty - where have all my
pictures gone? I did not delete them, the recycle bin is empty and searches
even for *.jpg etc come up nil.

However If I open the My Folders folder and type in a subfolder name in the
address bar e.g. add to c:\Documents and Settings\Default\My Documents\My
Pictures\ "Animals" or "Cars", or "Boats" or any other name I can remember
Abracadabra the pictures suddenly appear. If i use DOS and try the same I get
no such folder even a DIR will get a nil result.

So I now know that the pictures are there but My Pictures folder does not
show any of them. I have reset the defaults on the folder options so that's
not the answer.

Any body got any ideas as to what is happening please help (big badda boom!)

Without knowing more....read through this and see if any of this was done
recently:

The pictures that show up under Display Properties, Desktop are located in
these folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\user name\My Documents\My Pictures
C:\WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper
C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

Another checkpoint:

Also, go to: Start/Run then type in:
"%userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer"

To hide and/or remove/relocate:

Under My Computer scroll down to Shared Documents/Shared Pictures. If
Shared Pictures is listed, remove it.

TweakUI for XP: Unchecking "Lock Web Content" under Explorer to be added
to desktop disables the pictures from being listed.

Workarounds:

Create another folder (under your user profile), remove the pictures from My
Pictures that you don't want listed under Backgrounds and in the My Pictures
folder, create a shortcut to the new folder. Or create subfolders within My
Pictures.

Another note:

In Shared Documents there is "Shared Music" and "Shared Pictures". In
"Shared Pictures" there is a personal folder of pictures called "My
Pictures" and another folder called "Sample Pictures".

Take the "My Pictures" folder out of Shared Documents, and restart the
computer.
