want to reinstall everything with a new hdd and older OS
like 98 SE for this AMD, 64mb ram pc. also i opened up
the inside and took a look and what i saw was weird, the
hdd was hooked up to the middle of the ide cable and the
master ide was the cd-rom drive...i guess the pc is
really old. and i see other slots which may have been for
ram but in a different model also. the floppy only boots
on start up, not the cd. and for some reason when i
change the old hdd with the new hdd it doesnt read the
floppy anymore to let me boot with a disk but i see power
is going to the drive.

i wanted to know is there any guides to help me with
reinstalltion on old pc's..PLZ HELP!! i used u

First yes that computer is very old, putting XP on it is not a wise thing. About your IDE drive being in the middle it doesn't matter, even though I absolutely do not like to do this but some people like to put CDROM and IDE drives on the same cable, you just have to change the boot order, or you can change the jumper settings so IDE is the master and CDROM is primary slave.
About your RAM slots, I'm assuming you have EDO RAM, which is very old and you have to install it in pairs. Now about the new hard drive that you are trying to install can you tell us how big is it? If it is like 10 or 20 Gig it is possible that your "motherboards" BIOS does not support hard drives that big, there is a way around it though....

Whats the mother board model and manufacturer?
There are patch bios out there for certain boards.
If your afraid of re-flashing your bios yourself you can get a new
chip with the patch bios.

More details on your system would be helpful

e.g. what system is this (HP, Dell, custom built ..etc)
