my pc keeps on hanging

For some weird reason my pc keeps hanging on me...this is the most annoying thing.

im not sure at all about the cause, but viruses are a big contender, even though scan my drives every day.
the lock ups are completey random, coming when i least expect them and when i do.

maybe some of you know, but in the mcafee website, there is a pop-up that checks your computer security..etc,
and it attempts to open your cd drives from the net.

Mine opened,so i updated my firewall..etc

Then the pc crashed.

i booted up again,my cd drives in My Computer were nowhere to be found.
i checked the hardware profile and properties of each drive(they had a yellow exclamation mark beside the name)
and there was an error, saying that the drivers were intact but the pc could not detect them.

Here it is-
"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)"

Please help.

Sound like a lot of different problems possibly unrelated to each other.
Random lock ups are usually caused by either bad memory or heat.
The first thing I would do is shutdown the computer and unplug it.
Then open up the case and clean out all the dust inside it.
DO NOT USE A VACUUM CLEANER!
The fastest and easiest way to clean it out is with a can of compressed air.
While the case is open locate the ribbon cable from your CD drives and
reseat the cable in the Mobo.
That just may solve your CD issues.
I would then leave the case open if possible and start the computer.
Make sure the power supply fan is running and the heat sink (if it is of a
type that you can see if it works)
Run the computer this way and see if the lock ups continue plus check My
Computer to see if the drives are there.
If it works properly for a period of time then put the case back together
and try again to make sure your getting proper ventilation with the case
intact.
Post back your results so we know if you need further asistance or if your
problem is solved.
