I can connect and get my emails using outlook when I am connected via
Ethernet cable but not when connected to the internet via wi-fi. This was
never a problem until I switched over to a gmail type account(my university
uses gmail as their mail server)

Are you using any sort of firewalls or such on your machine or network? Is
it the same router that's supplying the wired & wireless connection?

Outlook neither knows nor cares how you connect to the internet. Look at
something affecting the network connection, like a firewall.

Why would my fire wall setting change when I am hard wired vs. Wireless? I'll
try it but that doesn't seem like it would be the issue...

I use the free version of ZoneAlarm, and two different networks. I am on a
University Campus, so my wireless is Campus wireless, while my local is
network for each building. However I seem to be fine no matter what network
I'm on using an ethernet cable.
