My monitor is black. I cannot see anything, but the computer is working fine.

Hi,
I have an HP DV100 laptop with 14.1 WXGA monitor. Last night I
installed MS tweak UI in order to stop one of my external USB harddrive
from auto running. Then I changed my power option setting to turn off
the hard drive before it goes on stanby or turns the monitor off. I
left the computer on for a little while until the harddrive supposed to
turned off. When I came back, I saw that the monitor was off, but all
the media control buttons play, FF, stop etc on. I tuched the mouse
pad, the monitor did not come back on. It was late night, so I just
turned it off with the power button and went to bed. (I have set the
computer that way, so I can turn it off in one touch). I got up in the
morning and turned the computer on, it did the same thing, black
screen. I tryed plugging it in to the desktop monitor, but It came on
only when I turned on the laptop and saw Microsoft Home then desk top
monitor went blank. The desk top monitor is working fine by the way.
Now I figured out that, I can see what is in the monitor with my flash
light. My monitor is like a book with very low contrast. I did the
system restore with the help of a flash light, but the problem
persists. I tried pushing and pulling a little rubbery pin that gets
pushed in when the monitor is closed, it dies not make any difference.
Can anybody tell me whether I need a new monitor or anything else I
can do about it? I will appreciate any help. Thank you.

so it looks like the back light is'nt on, when you
first switch on does mem check etc show on the
screen?
if so the light is ok, you can then boot int safe
mode, or vga mode. & change screen reselution. it
could be set to high, or refresh rate to high.

When I conneccted the laptop to another monitor, I could see Microsoft
Home for few seconds in that monitor. In the laptop monitor it is
always the same. It does seem like either the back light has burnt out
or turned off. Is there any possible way to find out which one is the
fact.
In my layman opinion, if the problm is my laptop monitor, I should be
able to see things when I plug in the external monitor.. I am kind of
puzzled there. Thanks.

without the flash light I cannot see anything any time. As you
suggested, if I wanted to lower the refresh rate, how do I do it?
Thanks.

Roy,
I just checked the refresh rate and found out that it set to 60 Hz.
That is the only rate my monitor can support. I have looked into the
local electrical stores such as Best buy and Fry's for the backlight
and found out that they do not sell it. I even called HP parts
suppliers, they said that I have to by the whole LCD pannel which are
priced at 6 to 8 hundred dollars. I did see one on ebay little
cheaper, and it is still 300 bucks. I found some backlights on ebay
and some other sites, but not sure that would fit my LCD. Sellers do
not know for sure either. Do you have any other suggestions? I would
appreciate anyr help. Thanks.

Can you see the POST (BIOS & memory checks) when you turn the laptop on? How
about if you press F2 or Del (or whatever key is used to enter bios) before
Windows Boots to get into the system BIOS, can you see the BIOS?
Is it defiantly powering down? Remove the power adaptor, and the battery,
then add the power again, and try going into the BIOS. (just a suggestion,
I've seen laptops that won't power off or wake up once they have gone into
suspend/hibernation mode).

Search the web. You should be able to find sites that sell laptop and LCD
parts including backlight components for very reasonable proces. I have
not shooped at any of these sites.
