My Icons keep changing

A

Alberto Montes

My Icons change every now and then. For example: yesterday
I had an image file on my desktop with a JPG icon which is
normal. Today when I turned on my computer that same file
has a TextPad Icon but it stills opens normally with my
image editor software. Actually, all of the icons on my
desktop for my personal files changed but Windows Icons
like My Network Place, Recycle Bin, etc are still the
correct ones.

Why does this happen?

Using Windows FIND tool, locate the files named ICONCACHE.DB, and delete
them to the RECYCLE BIN. After several reboots, XP should rebuilt this
database, and this may resolve the issue.

If problems arise, the old files can be restored from the BIN with a
right-click|RESTORE.

Alberto,

Repair the icons using TweakUI:

Obtain and install the Windows XP version of TweakUI.
Download it from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Open TweakUI (it's in Start -> Programs -> Powertoys for Windows XP).

To refresh the icons in the system change the size of icons in Start - Control Panel - Display - Appearance - Advanced, click Ok, then apply then change the size back.
