My HP Deskjet 812C won't work with USB

I used to use this printer with a compaq, and we had to buy a USB cable for it--- the parallel port doesn't work on the printer or something. But we just recently got a new Dell, and HP and Windows both suggest that it should automatically detect the printer and install everything. Problem is, it lists it as an "unknown device," and when i add "USB001" as a port, as the HP website suggests, my printer still doesn't work. Anyone know the answer?

Have you followed the installation procedure as given in your information
from HP? You probably have to use the HP installation cd first, then plug
in your printer when the software instructs you. I know that Epson printers
are notorious for this.
