my freecell won't open!

i work with win98 se and all of a sudden my freecell card game won't open.
the message is that there is a defunct "cards.dll". i put the windows in
again from start, the game didn't start then, my last "ghost" backups didn't
help either. what can i do without formatting the hard drive?
