I tried to burn a disc in itunes and itunes said software or driver is
missing. I'm getting an error code of 31?. I've tried system restore,
uninstalling itunes all useless. If I put either a cd or dvd in the drive
they are not recognised. The device is a HL-DT-ST DVD-+RW GSA-H21N. any
help in locating a driver and removing the old would be greatly
appreciated!!!!

Cal Bear ... thanks for the link and for mentioning that it will work in
Vista also ... but I was wondering ... I started noticing a lot of posts
about people losing their CD/DVD drives after July 26th ... maybe these
posts have been steady all along since January ... At first I thought I
lost my CD/DVD drive because I had uninstalled Roxio ... but I checked my
notes and that was many weeks ago ...

Has this been happening since January and I just didn't notice or did
something happen recently that affected a lot of people? It is very possible
this has been happening all along and because it didn't affect me, I wasn't
paying attention.

I guess I'm just trying to make sense out of why I suddenly lost my CD/DVD
drive ... did we all click the wrong button or key combo? Look at the moon
wrong? (g) ... baffled ... vanilla

Thanks guys, you really helped. Went into registry as informed followed step
by step instruction (VERY NERVOUSLY) and removing the device driver worked.
I can now burn discs again!!!!!! YIPEE

It seems to be happening since the release of Vista in January fairly
frequently. It also happened during the Release Candidates. It seems to be
mostly caused by Nero, Roxio and iTunes. And with other unknown causes too. I
have been very lucky with Vista, and have had no problems at all with CD/DVD
drives or USB devices. I don't think that any of the Windows Updates are related
to this problem. And this solution does not always solve the problem, although
it does seems to work about 99% of the time.

Good luck, and I hope it works for you.

I just noticed this thread which relates to my problem posted in another
thread titled :plextor MIA.
I lost my Plextor drive after installing iTunes.
So that was the culprit at least in my case.

Thanks, Cal Bear ... I tried the instructions given in KB 314060 and it
worked. After a restart, my CD/DVD drive appeared in My Computer and the
little Burn icon has returned to the appropriate place on Menu bars. I could
not understand why it took so long after I had deleted Roxio for the drive
to disappear ... oh, well ... all is well and the fix works ... that is what
matters ... thanks to all who post here with solutions! ... vanilla

Thanks Cal Bear, we had a similar problem and I knew straight away where to
look - and it worked for us too!.
