DVD-RW does not burn

Hi,

I recently got a new rig, 2.4 ghz duel core, 2 gigs of ram, nvidia 8800 GTS,
and a PIONEER DVR-212D DVD burner.. the last one is giving me a very annoying
problem.

I use itunes regularly, to listen to music and on my old computer, i used it
to create audio CD's, but for somereason on this vista PC i cannot burn. When
i try burning in itunes i get a message that says "Disc burner or software
not found...", when it try using windows media player to burn a cd, it
starts, but each song that tries burning fails to burn and i end up with a cd
that has empty tracks on it. When i use nero, it starts burning, but quickly
fails.

I recently updated to the most recent drivers for this device (version 1.21
i think), and this device should be compatible with vista. i don't know why
its not.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

thanks,

pat

freddy,

I followed the instructions in that link, but only found the "UpperFilters",
there where no lower filters, so i deleted the upperfilters anyways, and
nothing changed.. i just had to re-install itunes. I tried burning with
itunes again and i got the same message "disc burner or software not found..."

when i go into the advanced burning options in itunes it does not even
detect the burner.

still not sure why i cant burn cd's..

thanks though..

please help!

In XP, were you using third party software for burning as opposed to XP's
built in function?

I don't think this is a driver issue as other applications on your system
recognize the burner.

This appears to be one of two issues. One, you don't have the latest Vista
compatible version of iTunes or, more likely, this is a DRM issue. Even
though you were able to do this on XP, DRM, digital rights management, is
more integrated into the system on Vista. Further, as far as I know, the
DRM flag on tracks downloaded from iTunes, prevents them from being recorded
to other media. There are apps out there that are able to get around this.
Without the right software, I don't think you'll be able to burn CDs of
iTunes tracks. Check out the following which explains this a bit:

er.. My old Pc was running XP and it worked fine on that computer, this is a
new computer and the first OS on it is vista (this one), and im not burning
itunes music, im burning un-protected/burnable mp3's..

I just recently updated my itunes the most recent vista compatible version.
still not working though..

Deamon tools is another program i have running, but it is vista compatible,
and never stopped me before. virtual drives shouldnt be an issue (i have
two), are there any issues with burning and virtual drives?

thanks,

I'm sorry, unless I missed it, I didn't see anything in your previous posts
that indicated you were trying to burn unprotected mp3's. I saw a reference
to iTunes and thought you were referring to iTunes protected tracks.

I never said or implied you couldn't do it on your old PC, in fact, I said
quite the opposite.

Windowpane,

I have two suggestions:

1. Vista records error conditions. Take a look in the error report, Start
All Programs > Maintenance > Problem Reports and Solutions. Peruse the
report and note any error conditions contained therein. Focus on any
recommendations for action to take to correct any errors.

2. I saw the following recommendation on another forum to fix certain iPod
issues, but I'm not sure how it works or what if fixes. Even so, it goes
like this: The data on the iPod may be corrupted. To restore, select your
iPod in Apple iTunes. Then, click Restore on the Summary tab to restore your
iPod to working condition. You know more about the iPod than I do, so you
can do with this as you deem appropriate. My theory is that the procedure
may fix something to do with recording.

Don't give up. Post back on results.

Windowpane,

I just recalled an incident not long ago where a poster had a problem
similar to the one you are having. This person posted that the problem was
solved when Nero was uninstalled. It seems that some versions of Nero have
some unknown issues with Vista. You might consider uninstalling Nero to see
whether that takes care of your problem. If it does, I can recommend some
burners that work well with Vista.

i just uninstalled nero 7, sadly it still does not want to burn. i tried with
itunes and it still does not recognize the burner, and when i tried with
windows media player it started burning! and the first track was completed,
but the others failed to burn after analyzing.

as for number 1 in your previous recomendation, i tried that out but there
where only two errors there.. did you mean that i need to create a new error
and send it to windows? (ah, and the restore ipod thing didnt work either :S)

this is very tricky.. i bet its something super obvious too, is there
anything that you usually need to enable after constructing a computer to
allow burning?? or maybe vista has some security measures over it..

thanks still,

Do you have the latest firmware for your burner installed?
When you updated iTunes, did you simply go to the iTunes site or did you
select check for updates on the iTunes help menu? If you went to the site,
use the link on the iTunes help menu as you sometimes you can be misdirected
when going directly to such a site.

Upon doing a Google search, I saw quite a few instances of this type of
issue with iTunes and not just in Vista. Is there an itunes community or
forum listed at their website? If yes, you might want to check there as
well; be sure to tell them about your virtual drives.

Since you added this burner yourself, are you sure it is properly jumpered?
You mention security as well. There's a quick way to find out if it's a
security issue. Open Control Panel, go to User Accounts, click "Turn User
Account Control" on or off and turn it off; reboot and see if you still have
the issue. If yes, it's not likely a security problem.

Windowpane,

Well, at least you got one track to burn, which proves something. Look in
the Properties of the burner drive in Computer (formerly My Computer) under
the Recording tab and make sure your burner drive is selected.

In the error report, you only need to note whether you have any errors
recorded there and whether there is anything recommended to do to correct
them. If there is, take the recommended steps. You don't need to send
anything to Microsoft, unless you want to. Sometimes it sends a report any
way. It doesn't matter. Sometimes an error over there can cause an error
over here, like with the burner. Just a shot in the dark. Sometimes you can
hit something.

Sometimes the CD or DVD media is such that the burner, or the burning
software, doesn't recognize it. Try using a different media, just as a test
to determine whether the media is a problem. You never know.

Oh, and the iPod and iTunes software has been and is having some major Vista
compatibility issues. Apples is releasing continual updates to address this
problem. A lot of people are having problems getting their iPod and iTunes
to function properly in Vista, so maybe that fact explains something for your
experience with those applications. I don't know because I don't use them,
but I've seen a lot of comments about this on the Internet.

I'll post some recommendation concerning burner software that people who
have used it say works well with Vista. You can try any of those to see
whether one of them works for you. I'll post it below.

Windowpane,

I can now report that some people are posting that iTunes is disabling their
CD/DVD-ROM drives. They are saying that when they remove iTunes from their
systems, their CD/DVD-ROM drives become functional again. Interesting, no?

Okay,

my burner still isnt working. although it has made some progress after i
re-installed the newer version of nero. Itunes still doesnt recognise any
burner software, and nero itself cant burn without getting an error, but when
i burn with windows media player it completes the cd's burn, but when
inserted into any machine, the disc created by media player does not work.

any help would be helpful, and greatly appreciated

thanks,

pat

It's good to know I'm not the only one with this problem. I have the exact
same message from itunes about my burner softerware. If you find a solution
to this problem please pass it on, I am on the verge of giving up on my
burning options.
I just bought my computer, with Vista ultimate, which has a DVD burner
already installed. I took it back to Circuit City, called HP support, called
Apple Care support, did all the available updates for my drives, and
reinstalled itunes 5 times, still no solutions.
