My Documents folder and it's contents are displayed on my desktop

When surfing the web, I inadvertently clicked along the upper left hand
margin of the page. I must have clicked the My Documents icon on my desktop
because now along the top of my desktop I have a bar that contains the names
of my files in the My Documents folder. (They are accompanied by the word doc
icon). On the right hand side, there's an arrow, indicating that I can see
all the files in the my documents folder. Click on it, and the file names are
revealed along the right hand side of the screen. I've tried removing the My
Documents shortcut from my desktop, but the list of files remains. How can I
remove this?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Down in the taskbar, right click, select toolbars, and untick the one that
looks like it doesn't belong? Does that do it for you?
