"My Documents" folder and contents are gone

Hi everyone -

I am running:
Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

I was trying to do a little simple housekeeping on my computer today.
I was using the "Add or remove programs" utility to remove some old
applications that I had not used in some time - online poker, kids
games, etc. Some of these applications were sitting in "My
Documents" folder. I also deleted some shortcuts that were on my
desktop that pointed to Excel files that were sitting in "My
Documents". After doing that housekeeping I clicked on the shortcut
to "My Documents" that I had on my desktop and found that all my
files were gone. The shortcut was no longer pointing to 'My
Documents" but instead to "Local Settings". I went to "My
Computer" and found that "My Documents" had disappeared from the
listing of "Files Stored on This Computer". I tried doing a search
for some of the Excel files using the search function but came up
empty. I opened the Recycle Bin and I could see the applications that
had been removed and the shortcuts to the Excel files that had been
deleted. I restored all files from the recycle bin. This seemed to
recreate a "My Documents" folder but it only put those application
files (poker, games) into that folder - all of my excel files are
still gone. Stupidly, I don't have a backup for some of those Excel
files. I do have view hidden files enabled.

Any suggestions to recover these Excel files please?

I have just tried to download "Undelete 5.0 Professional Edition 30 Day
Trialware" but there appears to be an error in downloading. Does
anyone know of any good recovery software?
