my computer shop tells me this should not be on the desktop and will
affect how my computer performs, is this true

It's not only not true, it shows an incredible ignorance of Windows settings.

Rightclick a blank spot on the desktop, then Properties, Desktop tab, and
"Customize Desktop", to Uncheck the "My Documents" checkbox.

<Note to self> Never patronize that computer shop again, and if possible,
demand any money back ever paid to them. </Note to self>

The computer shop is bull-sh*tting you, simply not true at all. The only
thing /may/ happen when you open My Documents is there /may/ be a very
slight delay to populate the files and folder, IMHO there is nothing to
worry about.

Is your computer causing you troubles? If so, please describe the symptoms
and give a very good explanation of the details.

Thanks Mark for the reply, now sorted, and to William, 2 weeks ago my
norton liveupdate was playing up, on the instructions of their engineer
i downloaded the norton removal tool with a view to re-install the
program, on reboot the computer went bluescreen and shut down, i could
not reboot even from the disk or in safe mode, i had to take it to the
computer shop and they ended up formatting my drives and re-installing
windows, no problems since then but they mentioned the fact that my
docs should noy be on the desktop hence i asked your advice
thanks again

might check local high schools or other tech schools or library to see of there is a computer users group meeting that you could attend and/or seek help from instead of paying a store to do this type work for you. might learn more that way as well.
