When I try to open the C: drive from my computer, an open with application
comes up, but the C: drive opens through windows explore.

To my knowledge this screen only comes up if windows cannot find a specific
program to open it up with.

Can someone please help.

Right-click the icon for your C:\ drive and choose "Open". Look for a
file named auto.inf and delete it.

I have seen several similar reports recently. A Google search reveals
several lines of thought regarding auto.inf. Please expand on what you
think is going on.

You mean this about the Copee trojan?

Certainly the OP's computer could be infected but I always like to try
the simplest fixes first, like seeing if there's an auto.inf at the root
of the drive and deleting it. Of course, the OP didn't give us any
information about his computer and its cleanliness (as you know, that's
pretty par for the course here).

So maybe the answer I gave should be more thorough and run more along
the lines of:

The normal fix for this is to look for an auto.inf file at the root of
the drive and delete it. Standard troubleshooting of Windows machines
also starts with ensuring the machine is completely virus/malware-free:

Was that what you meant?

That would be more in line with your usual approach.

The vast majority of Google returns threw up malware but not all.
Several mentioned CD programmes, Easy Creator cropped up, and there were
some references to other programmes.

I looked at the McAfee details on the Copee trojan. It does not mention
changing the way Windows Explorer opens the C drive as a symptom. This
is what has been reported in other recent reports and where I was hoping
you might be able to offer an explanation.

Sorry, but I haven't seen anything like that here in the wild. Of course
this may be something new and it will show up eventually here on
clients' machines.

the most obvious is to use the BROWSE key and locate Explorer.exe in the windows folder and select it to use for the open process.
be sure and click the ALWAYS use button.
