It sounds like something is overheating. Both tasks would tax the CPU
and/or the hard drive and generate more heat inside the computer. Many
systems have automatic cutoffs when tempretures approach damaging levels.
If you have a tower case and are comfortable working inside it, open it
up and make sure all the fans are operating, the interior is dust free
and the air flow is not obstructed. If you don't see any problems your
case might need additional cooling fans, which are available at many
computer dealers. As a TEMPORARY measure you might be able to relieve
the need for additional fans by leaving the side off the case and
directing a room fan at the interior of the computer.
Don't operate the computer if the power supply, CPU or video accelerator
chip fans have failed.
