My computer won't shut down!!! The PC That Woudn't Die!!

Every time I use the Start button option "Turn Off Computer" and then select
"Turn Off", my computer restarts instead of shutting down and turning off.
We've been having thunderstorms frequently and the only way I can kill the PC
is to turn off my power strip when the computer is beginning to reboot. This
can't be a healthy practice, but it is the only recourse I have. Any
suggestions??

Hi Pete,

Does it do the same thing if you start in Safe Mode? If not, you
probably have a driver that is hanging on shut down and causes the
reboot instead.

I don't think that practice would actually hurt anything, as long as
Windows doesn't actually start loading yet (you have a few seconds
usually). But check under Control Panel -> System and the Advanced tab
under Startup and Recovery Settings button... Have automatically restart
box unchecked.

1. Make sure that the computer is completely virus/malware-free as this
is the most common cause of Windows machines refusing to shut down.

2. If the machine is completely clean, go through this shutdown

Hello Pete,

I have the same problem with my computer, it will not shut down when I
select "Turn Off" so I have to turn off the power. Has anybody been able to
help you with this problem? If so, can you post how to fix this problem.
With Microsoft Error Report "Crash analysis " they suspect that an error in
my computer ( RAM ) has caused this problem, also that I should consider
upgrading the BIOS on my computer. I just bought this computer a year and
a half ago and I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition. Need HELP !
Thank you

Hello again Pete
I finally fix my problem "Computer Restarts at Shutdown", I had installed a
Sony Handycam camcorder software Picture Package version 1.8 last year and
when Windows auto updated last February that's when I started to have this
problem. Sony says this issue is caused by a securty update that conflicts
with the USB driver of this software so they suggested to uninstall the USB
driver for the camcorder and this should resolve the issue. I did uninstall
the USB driver and now the computer is shutting down as it should, "PROBLEM
SOLVED" I hope this posting will help anybody that have installed a SONY
Picture Package version 1.8. for a DVD Handycam camcorder DCR-DVD203 and
many more model.

I have the same problem but I have Windows Vista and it will not allow me to
uninstall the USB driver. It keep saying 'USB Driver cannot be installed in
the current version of Windows'. Do you know if there is a way to force it to
run the uninstalled?

There are Vista specific newsgroups. I recommend you post to one of those.
